Toyota MR2

Hi folks, looking for some advice on a potential MR2 purchase.

Have wanted one for as long as I can remember and have my eye on one very close to me at the minute.

Currently driving a 2010 fiesta, 1.25. I've had it for just over a year, put up 30,000miles. It hasn't given me a days bother, regularly serviced and two new tyres. I got it for a song and actually think I might get more than I paid for it if I sell now.

I suppose my question is, would I be mad to swap for a 2010 fiesta to a 2003 Mr2?

I did 30,000 miles last year but I am switching jobs next week and expect this to drop to 20,000 miles this year. I have no experience with MR2's and was wondering if any body can shed some light on reliability etc.?

My dad is a mechanic so I'm lucky enough not to be charged for labour on any upkeep that needs done!

I'm torn about whether just to sell the fiesta and enjoy the Mr2 while I can now, not having to worry about space for kids etc. or hang onto the fiesta and hold off on the Mr2 next year when I could afford to keep both!

    Any opinions welcome!

I used to own a 1991 mk2 MR2, and miss it quite often.

That was a great car. Never drove the MR-S, which I assume your's is.

Look out for oil burning issues with the 1zzfe engine. A post 2003 one with the 6 speed box is the one to get and preferably get one that comes with a hardtop as well especially if its going to be a year round daily driver.

They're a brilliant handling car and they're quite light so the 140bhp is adequate. A 2zzge engine from a celica or tsport corolla is a pretty straightforward swap if you're after more grunt and there is supposedly a fella in leitrim who offers this swap in a drive in drive out service.

There's a swapped one on dd at the moment but its mated to a 5 speed box which doesn't suit them at all.

You might not be able to get insurance on a 15 year old car.

    This.

Ask your insurance company. See what they say.

    Thanks for the replies folks!

The one I'm looking at had the hard top and 6 speed gear box, that was a must for me.

Insurance company was my next port of call.

Going to give it a test drive and see how I feel after that. The logistics of a two seated seem OK now but it might be a bit of a pain in the arse at times. I may have to wait another 12 months!

    Thanks for the advice!

Sorry to hijack this tread, but how much is 2004 Toyota Mr2 worth with 81,000 service history, leather, new tyres and a hardtop. I was looking at one which liked but don't have clue what there worth, best he could do is €3000.

    I have a 2002 MR2 with 110k miles. Have it a few years now.

It is a second car so don't put up much mileage but it has been totally reliable. Mine burns zero oil. I use only Mobil 1 Newlife. I have removed pre-cats as a precaution.

Had to replace a lambda sensor once for NCT and adjust hand brake each time. Maintenance is generally quiet simple.

Brilliant car to drive, especially with top down.

I'd recommend a manual rather than paddle shift.

Long shot I know but does anyone know where I can get a 93+ mk2 mr2 turbod t bar? They’re getting rare, so hard to find a decent turbo now. Thanks.

They are great cars, I know as I have one however, easy to work on if not a bit tight, I would not buy one as an only car unless you are not using it much, the car is small, has only 2 seats and little storage space, all these things along are enough for it to not be suitable for most people, If you are looking for a great handling little car for fun then it is perfect. Another issue you will have is insurance, I do not think anyone will cover the car unless it was on a classic policy as it is over 15 years old, I got mine on a classic policy with autoline but I needed to have another car as my daily driver.

Just seen this was first posted back in 2018 :o
