Hi all. I'm viewing an apartment in Doughiska tomorrow and was just wondering if people have any idea what the area is like. I have heard conflicting reports so welcome any views.

    Beside Lidl.

    What side of the road?

    What side of the road?
Same as Lidl I think. Does it make a difference?

One side of Doughiska has high % council housing. Other side is majority private housing. Lidl is smack in middle.

It's gotten a bit more mixed lately: one of the long-time ghost complexes was completed and has turned into a social housing complex, but it's run by a co-operative based housing association and doesn't look anything like a council estate.

There are also a good number of privately owned houses in even those estates which have higher %-ages of social housing. This keeps things more mixed. Along with the fact that this is the working side of town: at one stage, a lot of the sole parents in the social houses were working in the various medical device companies.

All in all, there's nowhere in the area that I wouldn't live. Some estates are "nicer" than others. But it's still Galway, everywhere is pretty nice on the scale of things.

That estate you are talking about is grand as far as i know, there are some estates up there that have some anti social behaviour but so does some part of most areas of the city. That estate was probably built by Iggy Foy. Decent builder.

The place I'm looking is in Inse Beag. Wife will be working in Parkmore. Don't like the sound of anti-social behaviour... The rent is not cheap.

Where are you moving from? If it's Dublin, then what passes for ASB here will leave you laughing.

The only thing I'd worry about in that estate is traffic noise from the dual carriageway.

If your wife is fit, she's be able to walk to work from there. Well worth it IMHO.

Lived in Doughiska for 10 years. Found it a great quiet neighbourhood. Great bus service. Lovely park, decent facilities. New schools are very well equipped. I would have no worries about living there OP.

Like most of Galway it will matter more who your next door neighbour is than the actual estate itself. There are arseholes in every estate and really nice people in every estate.

The thing I like about this area is it is so multicultural. I often visit the playground there with my kids and there are children there from lots of different countries. Nice for them to get that experience as the area we live in (west of river) doesn’t have that rich cultural mix. Seems to be a very active community centre too in the Ard resource centre.

Imo, all of Doughiska is fine/safe/whatnot, but there are some parts that are quite unsightly, particularly this area: https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.2849921,-8.9899559,3a,75y,286.68h,86.7t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJxXEWvpde6qh7fjQX_Tsmw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Google's images there are from 2009. That part has been cleaned up and lots of apartments finished since then.

Thanks for all the replies. Still some conflicting views with most saying it's ok. Any more opinions out there?

    looking to rent.

Reason I ask is that if you don't like you can just move somewhere else.
That said, I think you will like it. It's a pretty good place to live.

There was planning in for a hotel the far side of Lidl. Think it was refused. But that site will be built on in the next couple of years I imagine. Just incase your property is overlooking that area. It could be a big building site soon.
