VW Golf mk5 tdi intermittent turbo and brake loss

    i have a 04 tdi mk5 golf, last night it developed a problem where it would lose most of its power, like the turbo blew but there was no black smoke.

    The brake pedal went very stiff but had no braking like it was air locked, however the problem remedies itself if i turn the ignition off and back on.

    Also there was oil coming up through the cap.

    The diagnostic reader came up with emissions error

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    I split up your post a bit, it was hard to read.

    What was the code you got from the reader?

    Oil coming up through the cap? You mean oil cap on top of engine? I have not seen that before. Is the oil level correct?

    The only thing the turbo and brakes have in common is that they both use vacuum so that is certainly where I would be starting. Lose vacuum and you will lose the ability to operate the vnt vanes so no boost and no servo assist for the brakes so they will go hard.

    Vnt vanes, your turbo is variable geometry. With vacuum applied the vanes closed and you get max boost, with no vacuum they open and you get little to no boost. This is all controlled by the ECU but if there is no vacuum there is no control

    No it means you need a good mechanic to do a proper diagnosis of the problem. Its a safety issue so worth getting sorted properly

    Any mechanic who knows what they are doing will have that problem diagnosed very quickly. And it won’t be the turbo.
