Defence - compelling a Defence

Our builder, engineer and surveyor won't file a Defence after 3 months. My solicitor says she is compelling them to do so. What if they don't file a defence after this - will they be in contempt of Court, and what will it mean for them, if anything? I still can't get my head around someone not filing a Defence.

Your solicitor will advise you of your options if defendants do not file a defence
