Car registration in May 2008 but taxed by CO2 emission -correct?

    Hey Folks,
My friend just purchased a 2008 Yaris 1.0L. We checked its logbook and found that it has "Date of First Licensing in IRL on 07 May 2008". It is taxed €270 per year based on the CO2 emission rule as shown in the tax disc.

We did a research and found that, a car registered before 1st July 2008 will be taxed based on Engine size. It can be taxed based on CO2 emission if the tax rate is lower. However,if it taxed rate is higher, it will be taxed by engine size.

Based on that, I think the car should be taxed at €200 and not €270 per year.
Could ye give me an idea on that issue? Is the car taxing correctly?
    Many thanks.

In 2008, tax based on emissions must have been lower than tax based on engine size for that car.

    Many thanks,
We found in its logbook with 127g/km for CO2 and tax is €270 is in within the CO2 band. I was just wondering the time tax office applied to the car is different with that they mentioned on motortax.ie.
Should my friend contact the tax office for that? Or where the best to contact?

In 2008, the system changed from being based on engine size to co2 output. This took effect for all cars from 1st July 2008. Cars registered from 1st Jan to 30th June that year were registered in accordance with the old system. After the new system became operational, anyone with a Jan-Jun reg had the option of opting for a re- categorisation to the CO2 basis. So for those cars, both systems were available for owners to use.

Cinio has already told you the reason but just to make it a bit clearer:

At the time when the car was registered back in 2008 the choices were:

    1. CO2 band B which at the time was €150.
2 Tax based on engine size which in 2008 would have been around €190 IIRC. Certainly more than €150 anyway.

So at the time the CO2 rate was cheaper so that’s what basis the car was taxed on. The fact that the CO2 rate has gone up since then and is now higher than the CC rate is irrelevant.

Ah. It is clear now. So, no chance to go back with c.c. Many thanks again.

Is €70 really a sticking point?
