New BMW 8 series

Have to say I think this looks incredible. BMW have been hit and miss a bit recently but they've certainly pulled out all the stops for their new coupe. Certainly pisses on Audi's generic design of late. Exterior design is just gorgeous, love the extension of the lines from the side vent. Replaces the 6 series and I'd imagine prices to be even more ridiculous than that model was. Interior is different to the recent and pretty dull 5/7 series design. Looks very modern and futuristic, although I wouldn't be mad on the glass auto lever. So what do you think folks?

glass auto level looks knackerish. And christ bmw..top the tank up..there's only 4km range left in it.
Wouldn't say no to one though:)

The rear of it looks over botoxed.

I've really gone off the whole VAG group lately, really feel they need to all become more adventurous. I just don't get why each manufacturer needs their entire range to look the same but different sizes.

Starts from 125k for the 840d x drive so probably 140+ for a bit of spec.
I like the looks and I’m sure it will be a great car. Will suffer the same horrendous depreciation of the 6 series though I expect.
The gran coupe version will be cracker too.

For performance the tesla/electric will keep alot away from the likes of this?I doubt it will be a big success.

First BMW in a few years I'm genuinely excited about. I always loved, and still love, the original E31. I like the fact that they're really trying to make this a modern interpretation of the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'; no fake exhaust noises being pumped through the cabin, a four wheel drive system that defaults to rear wheel drive and so on. I think it looks great and the combined kidney grilles is a throwback to older BMWs. Would need to be the M850i of course!

I presume in time they'll offer a smaller petrol engine and a plug in hybrid version, especially as it's the flagship of the range.

Its ok, its not radical like the i8. Its like their current models design language just turned up to 11.
I think it will be more impressive in the flash when you see how wide, and low it is.

the tesla only has straight line performance. Basically a one trick pony.
They're good but they're not a performance car.

At least you can drive the BMW on a wet day, electric cars aren't really suited to Ireland too many puddles.

Makes no sence, unless you generally drive into rivers?

Back of it reminds me of a Mazda 6. Still wouldn’t say no though.

    MAZDA-6---Atenza-Sedan-5350_35.jpg

Its an interesting area of the car market to be in for BMW as Audi don't have anything similar size and price. Mercedes would be the only other.
I wonder would certain buyers be between this and the i8? Those just looking for high end sports BMW.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Always like the the design of those Mazda 6.

The rear design is very similar. But will look different due to the stance, lower and wider of the 8.

    Probably because its quite generic.

Similar in that it has 2 tail lights ? I don't see any similarities at all.

Some will see it, some won't I guess.

The only semblence to the mazda are the long light clusters reaching around the flanks. You can do likewise with all cars in fairness.

In exterior styling I still think the Lexus LC500 is the best looking coupe in that price range. It also competes with Mercedes s class coupe.

Was recently in my first Tesla, the model S. Would be very pro Tesla and think they look great. However, inside was really cheap junk, really nasty, cheap looking plastics. I know that's not the main point of the car, but I don't see someone looking for a 140k luxury car being OK with the interior a Tesla (maybe I was in an older or lower spec model, I don't know)

Front and side have lots of curves and bulges, rear has lots of unnecessary creases and horizontal lines. Doesn't match up for me.

The new 8 looks good, I’d forget the diesel, the m850i is nice but less powerful than my m5! but is faster because of 4 wheel drive... the m8 will be the one to have but will be e200k approx, you’d want to have your head read to buy one new as there are better cars for that kind of money... after a few years of depreciation though🀔🀔

0-60 in 3.7 secs for the 850i....can't wait to see what the M8 brings.

Is the M850i not the M8 though? Same as the M760Li is the M7.

Very different thing to the M235i which isn't an M car at all.

No, M8 is due later in 2019. Similar I suppose to the 550i and M5 previously.

In that case I presume the M8 will be getting the same/updated version of the 4.4 twin turbo V8 that's in the current M5/M6.

What engine is in the M850i?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Same 4.4 as the M5 I think, except tuned down to 530hp instead of 600. The M8 will obviously get the same as M5, maybe tweaked a bit more by the time it comes out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

Didn't they change the N63 again for the 8 series? We're now onto N63B44O3 or something like that (the N63 in the G30 M550i is N63B44O2), I think this engine has some design changes compared to the N63 found in other BMWs.

The M5 uses the S63 anyway so different again to the N63.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,240 ✭✭✭Oral Surgeon

I think that the M8 should get a different powerplant to set it apart. Maybe the 6.6L V12 twin turbo?? or the new M5 engine but tuned up.... It is the flagship car and should be a good step up in power compared to the M6 M6 to justify the price...

They are going to do a V12 apparently, but the M8 will be using the S63 albeit tuned to give more power than the M5.

    So they’ll have a diesel, 2 different v8’s and also a v12? M860i ??

It would be hard to choose between an m8 and an m860i

And there’ll be an alpina too!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

They'll surely do a plug in as well (not in keeping with the ethos of the car I know, but it is the pinnacle of the range so it seems odd not to have technology like that), and I would have thought they'll do an 840i with the B58 engine, too.

Apparently all the big engined BMWs will be xDrive only going forward (cars like the 750i will be xDrive only once the LCI comes along); as much and all as I love the feeling and the handling you get from a rear wheel drive BMW, if they're going to have a system like the one in the 8 series (where it's only four wheel drive when it needs to be and defaults to rear wheel drive) then you've got the best bits of rear wheel drive and four wheel drive, so it makes perfect sense really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,240 ✭✭✭Oral Surgeon

Agreed, my car breaks traction most of the time... an m tuned rear biased 4 wheel drive would be nice....

I initially thought this was replacing the 6 series coupe but it seems to be pitched at a higher level.
Is there a new 6 series coupe coming or is the 6 name being left to the lump that was the 5 series gt?

I wouldn’t be holding out for a replacement, given that BMW haven’t built a 6 series coupe in over a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

They are aiming at different markets, the G15 is going head to head with the S-class Coupé and 911, the F12/F13 were kind of more competing with the CLS and Audi A7, although I would agree that the F12 wasn't really a competitor for the C207 (E-class Coupé), then again that was a glorified C-class not a proper E-class in its own right.

They are brining out an 840i (with no xDrive) next year for anyone who wants one that's cheaper to buy than the M850i but doesn't want a diesel.

One of the few non M cars that had an S coded engine, so yeah, it's as close as they ever got to making an M8 for the E31. If I had lots of money I'd have one in the morning.
