Annoyed at getting no where

I applied to my dream company a few weeks ago, passed phone interview, so myself and 2 others got through to the final interview, which was two weeks ago. Received notification lately that I was unsuccessful. I asked if they could email me feedback, which I am still waiting for.

In the meantime, I contacted my references and discovered they were never rang. I actually knew the other interview candidates and discovered after contacting them that they weren't successful either nor were there references called. It's so disheartening that they brought us if knowing full well they had no intention of hiring us. I know companies do this, but I informed them I had to get a childminder for the final interview if I got through, so they knew it was going to cost me extra money to get there.

Just had to get it off my chest. Rant over.

Companies don't interview people for fun.

    Maybe the budget was cut.

Maybe neither of you did a good final interview.

Maybe they hired someone else. Perhaps an internal hire or someone you're not aware of.

Having seen it from the other side I can say that companies don't interview just for fun or to waste people's time. This is their time too. Hopefully you'll get some decent feedback on what happened and why you didn't get the job. Good luck

Found out that some one was already hired before we went for our interview.
Some companies do just interview. I know of a company that interviewed people for a job that was already filled nearly 3 months previous. Companies have to advertise a job, even if it's already gone beforehand.

Interviews are a huge pain in the ass, we don't do them just for the hell of it and I would be surprised if this company was doing a series of interviews with no intention of giving anybody the job. Why on earth would they bother?

I also don't know why the references are relevant, why do you think they would have been contacted? I only contact references if I am considering making a job offer, I certainly don't contact the references for everybody who interviews.

I interviewed a series of 10/11 people a few months ago and we didn't hire any of them because I felt that they just were not the right candidates. I wasn't going to take the best of a bad bunch, I'd rather wait and get the right person. From the outside that might have looked like I wasted their time and was never going to hire anybody but that simply wasn't the case.

Of course it's not wasting time if they were seriously considering hiring these people.

I was surprised by the references as the manager said I had a strong interview and they double checked my references at the end saying they will be contacting them and will be getting back to me after consideration.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't true.

I used to work in recruitment and out of the thousands of companies I dealt with, not once did I come across a company who interview people when there's no job or no intention of hiring someone.

It doesn't even make sense. Why would they do this?

It sucks you didn't get the job, but the overwhelmingly obvious explanation for why you didn't get the job is because they thought you were unsuitable.

References are usually contacted if they know you will take the job. I wouldnt contact references till after the person accepted.

What has that got to do with how good you would be at the job? Doesn't exactly demonstrate your eagerness to get working, flexibility, or commitment to the process.

I know people have children, but you don't need to mention them in an interview or mention any commitments outside of the job. It immediately tells them, this job is not my priority and my mind is not fully on the position.
They legally can't rule you out for having children but why mention anything which may make them make judgements on you?

Don't mention husbands, children, family or anything not job related in an interview. At the most, chit chat about your journey is as personal as it should get.

References of the successful applicant are normally contacted.... after the decision is made.

I've never heard of references being contacted for every candidate.

There's a good chance that they filled job internally but only on a temporary basis while they looked for someone permanent. Very common. Bit of tough luck on the guy that said yeah I'll fill in for the mean time
Have to agree with most of the comments above - would be a waste of time to do interviews for a job that didn't exist. Chalk it down to experience - one more job you were turned down for so your odds go up on the next interview.

References aren’t checked till they offer you the job, or just before it. So they simply don’t contact them at interview stage

When you mentioned the childminder to them you became an employee that’s going to cause them hassle.

Your personal life is if no interest to them. Weather it not you have kids, is if no interest. But going about having to get s child minder will raise flags.
