Hey folks, have a deposit down on an f30 330d m sport in the UK. It’s a 2014 with 34000 miles. Full bmw history. Just wondering what are they like to own day to day (mpg, servicing etc)? Haven’t had anything even close to this fast since an s2000 a few years ago so certainly excited about getting it! I’m aware of the potential timing chain issues but would hope at the low mileage and with the full history, 6 cylinder and auto that it won’t be an issue. Car will have a 2 year bmw warranty as well. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

DPF. The mileage is too low to keep it fresh

Thanks Lorenzo, certainly something to keep an eye on. Mileage is definitely at the lower end!

As a forum lurker I know he owns one so I’m hoping he will come along with some feedback!!

Wouldn’t be overly concerned about DPF. I’ve a 640d outside my house that has done 10,000kms in 13 months and there’s not a bother on it.

I drove it briefly once, very impressive cars.

As big inside as an E39 5 Series and easily as quick as my E60 535D was (When it worked:pac:)

I have the bigger and heavier F10 530d since April but just to give you an idea I'm getting on average around 38 mpg from it, I do about 90/100 km daily in it which includes mostly motorway driving but also some R roads. I can get 40/42mpg on long trips keeping under the speed limit. I love the power, straight six sound and refinement so I'd expect the smaller more nibble 330d to return slightly better fuel figures.

One thing I will advise though is get the best spec you can, the base F30 spec is pretty miserable, I'd aim for a car with at least the wide screen Pro Nav, leather heated front seats and M Sport Plus pack which includes the 19" rims and blue painted brake calipers. They really make a huge difference to the appearance of the F30.

Cheers Bazz, they are quite thin on the ground with the right spec, even in the UK. I managed to get the pro nav anyway but not the m performance pack! Mpg on yours sounds great, not far off my old car (s40 d4). I can’t believe how something can combine power and economy so well. I’d imagine you’re really noticing the difference in the 6 cylinder versus the 4?

There is a nice difference in power alright.

The timing chain issue was only on the N7 engine on the e90

    f30 330d m-sport

Absolute amazing machine, the 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine, produces 258bhp and 413lb/ft of torque. 8-speed auto with paddle shift.
Find a quiet road, stick her in sport + and select launch control can do 62mph from in 5.6 seconds. There is a button called "eco pro" which I am afraid to press but reportedly can get 57 mpg. Mine is "stuck" in sport mode and still get 42 mpg.

The blue calipers are actually brembo brakes which are an e800 option but a 2k retro fit from bmw. The engine sound has a lot more of a growl compared to a 320d.

If possible go for the msport, auto with 19s, HK sound system and pro nav. and enjoy. Practicality with outstanding performance

Only seeing this now...your pager is broken SG :P

I bought mine in September 2015 and have had very few issues with it. The DPF is something to be mindful of but mine gets a motorway spin every 2 weeks or so and a good brisk drive every few days. Mine currently has 52,000 km on it and had 25,000 km when I bought it.

The timing chain is actually an issue on the 330d but nowhere near as a big an issue as the 320d. The 330d engine holds a lot more oil which helps plus it's not as stressed at the 320d. A user on here (won't mention names) was in the process of buying an F30 330d from the North. The deal was in progress when the chain snapped while being driven by the dealer meaning a full engine rebuild. Mileage was 100,000 km. I didn't hear what the cause was. I'm keeping mine serviced within the BMW network in case this happens as there's a much better chance of being looked after should this happen.

This car as you may know only comes in Auto but it's an absolutely superb auto box especially in Sport mode. The torque is relentless too. It took me a long time to warm to buying a diesel (this is my first one) but it was a very good decision to go for this as my first diesel.

Remaps can see c. 330 bhp and 680 Nm Tq

Any more questions OP, ask away!
