utility room not off the kitchen

    Hi

We are planning to create an open space with with a 20m2 extension for a kitchen and using the existing kitchen space for a dining and living area.

The plans are done and I am happy with them, however the utility room is away from the kitchen. so it is essentially a separate room that you need to walk to through the dining area from.

Now it will have tall storage press / sink / cabinets / washer and dryer and an external door to the garden with washing line outside etc.

I had no problem with this to be honest but some people are adamant I have to have the utility to the kitchen. I don't know is this an old fashioned thing

presume you're looking for opinions? honestly, your approach sounds fine to me...
What functions will you perform in the utility room that are directly & frequently connected to the kitchen? only thing I can see is if you store bulky mixers / appliances type things in utility room - but how frequent is that?
Some people don't like the utility being off the kitchen, as it means going through the kitchen with dirty clothes to deliver to the washing machine. so that is a benefit in my mind...

If its close to the washing line and has a sink, it makes perfect sense.
No reason for it being near your kitchen.
People just asssociate having the washing machine in the kitchen - have they given reasons as to why it should be beside the kitchen?

It makes sense to me to have the utility room close to the bedrooms. I don’t like carting clothes through the kitchen to the utility room. And ideally have a tall slim cupbord in the kitchen where you can keep the broom etc so you’re then not having to go to the utility all the time to get the broom to sweep the floor!

Sounds fine to me. My parents have their dishwasher in the utility, but if that's in your kitchen, then you're grand.
Effectively what you have there is a laundry room. Call it that instead. :D

Due to a host of reasons ours isn't off the kitchen, but it's at the back door in our new build. So when you come in you can leave your coat, dirty /wet clothes there, and then go through the house.

Ours is upstairs and we love it! As far away as possible from the kitchen- dirty clothes stay upstairs and are easier to put away. We rarely use a line to dry clothes.
