Overpayment repayment

    Hi,

I was recently advised I was overpaid last year 2017, I agree I was overpaid and am willing to repay the amount through salary deductions. The problem I have is my employer has said I will have to pay the GROSS amount I was overpaid back from my NET wage. Effectivily paying the tax and other dedcutions twice. Then at the end of the year the onus is on me to go to Revenue to seek a refund of overpaid taxes.

Does anyone know if you have to repay the NET (after tax) value of your overpayment or the GROSS (before tax) value back?

Repaying as my employer has suggested will also see me overpaying PRSI, USC & Pension Cons, they have not indicated how I would seek a refund of these.

You might be best to ring Revenue and ask them for guidance. They're very accomodating and genuinely want to help you pay tax by the book.

Thanks Dudara, I have the query in with them. Just trying to get more info, I also contacted the WRC and am awaiting a reply.

When i was overpaid I repaid the gross amount against my gross wages Afaik. I don't have my payslips on me as I left work but I'll check tomorrow when I'm back in

If the problem was this year, it would be simple, as they could just adjust the wage they're paying you and let the payroll software handle the tax.

If I were you I'd ask the employer/payroll person to explain in simple terms why it needs to be gross rather than net.

Looking at https://circulars.gov.ie/pdf/circular/per/2017/10.pdf I can see they also require gross, not net:

    "8. Overpayment Recoupment
8.1 The amount of overpayment to be recouped is the gross amount of the overpayment."
