    Hi All,
Been thinking of a change in the motor to a BMW F10 about 2013/14 see link below for example. Any of these I look at are at or near 100k, Aside from FSH what should I keep in mind?

    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/5-series/used-2013-131-bmw-5-series-520d-se-18-dublin-fpa-19402143288486

    Thanks in advance.

Just make sure the timing chain has being done on it. Either by recall or the previous owner had the chain kit done. Other then that they are a well built car. Not much goes on them at all. Mainly timing chain problems then your front spring arm ball joints give trouble but this is a wear a tear part anyway.
Anything else u need to know about them just ask

That is a pre LCI, as you are near the change date I would hold out for one. Then if you are in 2014 LCI territory you should now the N47 was changed to the B47 in late 2014, there is a consensus that the B47 is immune to the timing chain issue but it is also too early to be sure. The other school of thought is that the issue on the N47 was resolved by 2014 with various updates.

Long oil change intervals are also blamed for chain wear so FSH is essential. A 100K car may only have 3 oil changes, so lower mile cars are a better bet, when you can start doing annual oil changes instead of the longer, prescribed intervals.

An emerging F10 issue is also corrosion on the doors edges where the chrome trim sits, this is well documented in the UK, so check these areas carefully.

Never mind this b47 engine crap. They all give trouble and still do to this day. So nope there not immune at all have done ages. And even after all the updates to the engine I’ve also fitted new chain kits and then the problem repeats it’s self after a while. Yes ur kinda right about the oil changes it defo isn’t helping at all but a major factor with most is the dual mass flywheel is sitting directly behind the chain. And is causing vibration and slaps thus stretching the chain over time. And it doesn’t help that the chain is no bigger then a bike chain.

Thanks for the above guys - would I be better holding out for a 2014/15 model? Not in a hurry to change so can push it out 6/ 12 months to fit in my budget

I’m telling u first hand that u will still have the same with the different years even tho my claim they fixed the issue it’s totally incorrect because the problem still exists I have done numerous with the updated engine and they still suffer the same fate. Only thing is once it’s being done recently and either a genuine or febi brand chain kit used would more then likely see u through ur ownership of the car. So no point in holding out your not going to achieve anything.

I would certainly hold off for an LCI, a late N47 or an early B47, not a deal breaker, though the B47 is cheaper to tax.

That sounds like getting an automatic is the way to go then, since they won't have a DMF? I have heard that autos are far less prone to the problem than the manuals are.

I would be getting an auto - to be fair i am also looking at the A6 as an alternative but just overall leaning towards the F10

Mother of God, why do manual F10s even exist? 8 speed auto is a very sweet thing.

If you are looking at A6 I'd be interested in how you find it compares, the Audi felt souless to me, the BMW inside and out just does things better IMO.

This is true hence what I said about the dmf but of course Bmw would never admit that but when u gave it all stripped down and look at where everything is positioned you can see that the engineering wasn’t the best fought out plan.
Of course the chains do stretch on the autos also I’m not saying they don’t. But no where near to the level of the manuals

There’s no comparison between the a6 and 5series. It’s like chalk and cheese. And that model of a6 has being around a long time now.

Buy the Bmw all day long and u won’t regret it

I though the same until I drove both. The higher spec A6 got my money.

That's what I thought, but I never understood why there was a difference until now. Thanks for the explanation.

As you point out, the autos can still suffer, after all the N57s are almost always automatic and they can have the problem as well but they have six cylinder refinement and a 9 litre oil capacity which means they can go further between oil changes anyway, it's only if you do something stupid like go say 30,000 to 40,000 miles on the same oil will they have the problem.

The 6 cylinders don’t really give trouble now to be honest. Think we might of maybe done one down the last number of years

Quite a few 'innacuraccies' in the description of that car!

Top of the range, lol. I'd say half the description of that car was cut and paste from another advert. It doesn't have half that stuff mentioned.
