    Hey guys,

Have run into a bit of a problem with the back tax system and im not sure how to proceed to rectify it.

in 2016 in purchased a scooter from an indy mechanic, the bike had no log book but he assured me he would apply for it and get it to me as soon as he could :pac:,
(I was familliar with the bikes history so i took it anyway)

so 2017 rolled around and i got tired of pestering him for the book so i just went and filled out the relevant paperwork, booked my solicitor etc and got the book by afidavitt as one normally would in this case.

its 2018 now and im gonna start using the scoot as a daily driver so i said i need to get some tax on it, at €67 per annum i thought that I would be happy enough to pay the year or so arrears but this is where things get hairy for me.

The logbook lists that the "Date of Sale" for the scooter was back in 2013 and thus when i go online to motortax.ie and try to tax it the system is trying to charge me arrears from this date which amounts to approximately 450 euro, I definitely only own the bike since february of 2016.

How can this be and who should be contacted to rectify this quickly?

want to avoid change of ownership if possible as the bike is 2001 with only 1 previous owner, if i have to go down this route what is the quickest way to change ownership and back? is it possible to change ownership and tax the bike in person at the tax office and then change it again in person the day the book arrives?

    Sell it to yourself.

Ie, if your name is Patrick Murphy, and the log book is in that name.
Sell it to Pat Murphy, at the same address.

    Or
    James to Jim
William to Bill or Billy or Will
    Richard to Dick
Or use the irish version of your first name.

Given that the error made is not mine I would like to rectify it properly before resorting to somthing like this, Would be worried that the above may invalidate my insurance until it is back in my name, another reason im trying to avoid it.

Sell it to yourself in Irish. Eg John Murphy, O connell st, dublin to Sean ó Murchú, sraid ui chonaill, baile atha cliath. Had to do it once myself as I forgot to renew an off the road declaration and it worked no problem.

Did you have to change your name to the Irish version on the Insurance Cert? Same with your driving licence?

    I didn't. Don't see why I'd need to either.
