[ltr]I had my wife’s 8 year old low mileage Nissan Note tested recently.  The tester failed it on a worn nsf inner tie rod end.  I was very surprised at this because of the cars age and mileage and because there was no tyre wear/steering vibration/etc.  Booked it in to the Nissan Garage (directly opposite within the same industrial estate) and had the tie rod end changed, cost €200.  Girl at reception said the mechanic mentioned it wasn’t excessively worn at all.  What is the NCT playing at?????[/ltr][/font]

Judgement call on the part of the NCT guy. At what point is a tie-rod worn enough to fail? One man's fail might be another man's borderline pass. I've had it happen to me a few times over the years.

The fact the car is under 10 years old means that it will get a 3 year NCT. If there is any wear at all, it's a judgement call as to whether it will last the 3 years. If the car was 10 years old or over, they possibly would have let it go as it get's tested in a years time.

Personally, if there was wear, you're better off getting it done as a broken tie rod end can obviously be very dangerous.

2 year NCT is the max..

I had similar coil spring change required for NCT...garage guy said it could have passed as there was no damage...i think its more about risk of it getting failed in future rather than being damaged when tested.

NCT don't test based on risk. They only test the car based on its condition on the day.

As it's subjective one man's pass will be another man's fail. We had a car in today that failed on a bushin. It had been replaced 2 weeks ago.

I had a car once that had a disconcerting feel at motorway speeds when not going 100% in a straight line. It was really unnerving.

Passed two NCTs no problem and local garage reckoned all was well too.

By chance I was getting a job done at a different garage (air con condenser install) and the guy there told me my inner tie rods were worn. Got them done and my disconcerting issue was resolved :)

In your case I reckon the NCT chap should be thanked.

Even the rubber boot around the balljoint being perished can mean a fail. And on a cvrt this is a definite fail.. for hgv vehicles.. I find the NCT very reasonable to deal with compared to the cvrt even on small lgvs. and I'd be happy enough fail if brakes tyres /suspension had any issues ..

Without inspecting the op's car it's difficult to know that. They don't always get it right. I know someone who had a car that failed because of a leak in the steering rack even though it wasn't leaking at all. The leak was coming from the rocker cover gasket and dripping down onto the rack.

It was quiet easy to see this if the nct guy looked at it properly.

    That's not how it works.

If it's (tie rod) loose or obviously worn it's a fail
Nissan lad said it was worn but not excessively....that's a fail. If Nissan lad said there was no wear on the tie rod than the OP would have a point.

Excessive wear is a fail criteria for bushes, ball joints etc

It may not have been excessively worn but it was worn. Case closed.

Am I the only one questioning why you'd bother bringing and 8 year old car to a main dealer for suspension parts?
