Stay in Ireland or move abroad?

    Hi,

    So my friends all moved to Australia in November and I stayed in Ireland to complete my dip year. It was always my intention to follow them over after my dip year. However, now I am now completely torn between staying in Ireland to teach (and trying to get permanency) or going abroad. My parents want me to stay and try get a permanent position before I go travelling and then others tell me to go.

    There are some reasons I am hesitant to go;
    1. All of my friends who went over do not work in education and are working in bars etc. during there time there and this is something that worries me a little because we would have contrasting work schedules.

    2. They have repeatedly told me they are enjoying themselves but don't get what all the hype is about.

    3. I love the school I am currently working in and there is a job opportunity next year in the school.

    4. It worries me that if I come back from travelling it will be much harder to get a mortgage etc. because I may have to wait a few years until I am made permanent when I return.

    On the other hand I feel if I wait around to get permanent I could miss out on the opportunity to travel with my best friends. I also feel like everyone my age have or are planning on leaving Ireland to go abroad and don't want to regret staying in Ireland.

    Anyway, sorry about the long rant but I'm just wondering is anybody else struggling between staying in Ireland or moving abroad?

    Only you can really answer that I'm afraid! Ultimately, a permanent job isn't the be all and end all, but you have to decide what's most important to you.

    I went abroad before getting my Dip, and then moved around a bit when I came back to Ireland. I almost have my panel rights built up now in the area I want to be in. I have friends that went straight out of college into a job, and are permanent in those schools now. Some of them are happy with that, others regret staying at home and not going travelling. Other teacher friends went straight abroad after graduating and have no intentions of coming back!

    I'm sorry if that's not particularly helpful, but what I'm trying to say is that there will always be jobs (even if they're not always easy to get), you just have to think about what will make you happiest.

    Tell your rents to fook off, do what you want.

    I moved last November, best decision I've made, you've a lifetime to spend in a crappy doe job, with crap money, terrible quality of life.

    You get 2 months holidays a year right?
    I would take into account all the travelling you can do then also.....

    You say you are happy with the school and a job is on the horizon. I would stay, get the job and then when some of your friends are looking to travel or even better are already living abroad, take a career break and travel the world visiting them. Come back after a year or two to your job.
