In light of all the issues in Ireland's gangland and the sport of boxing , Should boxing coaches and club employees be garda vetted and unless cleared of gangland affiliation be shut down.

Anyone involved in any organisation, paid or voluntary, that includes children or vulnerable people, is required to be Garda vetted.

Child Protection laws require it, and while it's a bit of a headache for voluntary organisations, it's worth it.

Anybody dealing with kids should be vetted.

As for the boxing - how do you draw the line between those who are actually staff and those that turn up to train who may or may not have "connections to the gangland" ?

good to know, how then are the gangs able to get so ingrained in boxing clubs?

I'm not sure if they are.

The vetting also really only covers those who are training children or by the nature of what they do, have access to children.

So an underage coach needs to be vetted, but someone attending the club to train in their own time, or adult-only coaches won't need to be vetted.

Likewise parents or other adults who are there accompanying their own children, don't need to be vetted, even though they may be hanging around all day and dispensing "advice".

So it's easy to see how the underage coaches can be squeaky clean while there could be plenty of undesirables otherwise involved with the club.

The vetting process results in details of an applicants onvictions being disclosed to employers. It's up to employers whether to treat those convictions as a bar to employment. Sporting clubs are generally concerned about convictions that suggest an applicant might pose a danger to children.

Plus, of course, employeess and volunteers are vetted, but customers and club members are not.
