I'm looking at changing jobs and doing something this year but not sure what to do. I was considering accounting but not sure if I would be able for it. I would like to do an evening course for a few weeks to see if I can do it before deciding on going any further.

Another thing I have an interest in is device manufacturing and found this course online http://www.cit.ie/course/CREBMDM7. Would something like this help me considering that it's not a full award?

Accounting is a much better choice compared to manufacturing if you're looking for stability and career progression.

You could start with an accounts role and go from there. Accounts is not difficult at all. You just need to follow rules and process.

I know accounting would be better, but kind of terrified of starting something new and not knowing what to expect. What is a typical day for an accounts technician?

The key thing would be to start in a junior role, so they know you will need training.

An accounts person typically does this:

    - When a sale is made, add the customer to the system, and generate and send an invoice
    - When a cheque is received, add the payment to the system, and lodge the cheque to the bank
    - Input all expenses into the system, including the payment of wages
    - Handle the tax payments
    - Handle credit control (probably)

Basically you look after all the financial ins and outs of the company.

It's one of those things which is tricky for a few days but then you start getting the hang of it. The key thing is to be organised and obey the rules.

You can then slowly get your accounting qualifications.
