connecting dvr to internet

Trying to connect a DVR system to the internet. The virgin media router is a cisco epc 2425. Does port forwarding need to be enabled?

Port forwarding would be needed to view remotely.
Some DVRs also have a cloud but i prefer the port forwarding myself.
