I’ve just bought a car that has no tax and the log book is sent away. I am just wondering can I tax the car without the log book. Or do I have to wait fir the log book to come. Also what form to I need to fill for the tax office

You can track the change of ownership online by putting the reg in here, once you can see that the change of ownership has been processed, you can request a PIN and tax the car online.

Not sure if this is directly related but I just found out you can pay your car tax even without the log book by using the car reg and the last 6 digits of the chassis number for the pin on the motor tax website. Might be of help to some

Pretty sure that's only for the first taxing of a brand new car. Certainly used to be, anyway.

Yep, only works where there is no VRC issued for the car, as you say when the car is new, or also when it’s an imported used car.

and if the transfer hasn't been processed the disc will go to the selling owner instead of the new owner.

You don't need it in the tax office either

So I being checking the motor tax website it shows that they have being notified of change and that the registration certificate is awaiting issued. Could I chance it and request the pin to tax it online.

I was able to get the pin, but that all as far as it will let me go. It says that the registration number and pin do not match

Go into your nearest motor tax office, fill out the correct form with your details and insurance details, hand them over the counter, pay, walk out with your tax disc in your hand.
