It could but pre IAG days Aer Lingus aligned themselves with United and jet blue maybe within Europe it could help if they keep their existing partners as well.

This sounds like it is just right for EI.
IAG would not have big issues with EI maintaining the interline deal with JetBlue or Air Canada. They have stated that they want EI to join the TransAtlantic joint venture, I would guess that this would require an end to the United codeshare.

It would be good to be clear on how this reciprocates. It looks like (e.g.) BA Gold fliers would be able to earn BA tier points etc and get full lounge, check-in and priority boarding benefits on EI flights, but it doesn't seem clear on a quick read whether the various Aer Club tiers would earn Aer Club tier points and enjoy the same benefits on (e.g) BA.  Having flown a lot with both EI and BA for many years now, I'd love to consolidate onto a single FF card that covered both airlines equally. I thought that the IAG/EI tie-up would have brought this about by now; if o/w connect effectively does this (and actually happens) it would be great...

Same here, at the moment i credit everything to BA, i'll only move away from that if EI becomes recognised across OW. Its pointless otherwise really.
