Apps for 2015 Leaf

Do those of you who have a Leaf for a while use the apps or websites for the Leaf, I'm just wondering if it's worth the hassle, and possible security risk - they sent me my password in plain text  so I'm not sure I trust their expertise! This post is half rant / half info so bear with me! But if there's an app or site you find useful I'd like to hear about it.

Even though my Leaf is imported, I managed to register with CarWings with the VIN, and using the Leaf Manger app I can see the charge so I think the VIN was deregistered. The official Nissan Connect app on Android, doesn't open and immediate redirects to a website with a useless error message "app has encountered an illegal operation" or something like that; I think it's because my phone is rooted.

But Nissan Connect or YouPlus won't let me add the VIN and the CarWings web page is 404 so I can't see any stats etc.

And finally here's a summary of what I've encountered so far on Android or websites:

Nissan Carwings - allowed me to register and add the car, seems to be sending info but the webpage has been taken down
Nissan Connect - is this really just to add social networks to the car? Why not add Netflix to it so I can watch a film while I'm driving
Nissan YouPlus - is this meant to be the replacement for Carwings? won't let me add the VIN on the UK site and the Irish site is just for booking services

Nissan Connect App - possibly doesn't work on rooted phones, or only on whitelisted phones?
Nissan Leaf Manager - 3rd party app, working but slow - that might be Nissan's servers fault

    Other useful apps
E-cars connect - shows charge points and availability; but it's sloooow. Do you need this as the on board navigation seems to have the same points?
Leaf Spy - connected with a old cheap OBD2 dongle that I had lying about. The only app I didn't have hassle with! May shell out for the full version

    Any others you find useful?

    Just tried again on youplus.nissan.co.uk/GB/en/YouPlus/register/
It just asked me for the VIN and when I entered it it I got this message:
Thank you. However, to make it easier for you, we've already created your YOU+NISSAN account - you'll shortly receive an email with the details. Please then use these to sign in to YOU+NISSAN and activate your account by accepting the T&Cs.

Maybe I'll have to ring them on Tuesday

Yes, you'll need to ring them. You should be able to do that Monday as support is in the UK.

As for security, well car companies are not the best at that kind of stuff (Tesla being the exception, their security is excellent both on board the car and in their back office services).
Nissan with the Leaf did better than average in terms of securing the Nissanconnect/carwings system but in the process almost completely broke the functionality.

Most Mk1.5 Leafs (132-152 reg) have a SIM card from Telenor in norway and roam on any local network they can pick up. Given the Leaf lacks an LTE modem (LTE supports local breakout for internet traffic for roaming users) that means traffic get trucked back to Norway before hitting the real internet. That's one reason why data roaming used to generally be slow and unreliable.
Across this roaming data connection the leaf runs a reasonably secure (for the time) IPSec VPN tunnel via Norway to Japan (for the original carwings) or to front end servers on Microsoft's Azure cloud services operated by a French subcontractor (in the case of Nissanconnect EV). These are HTTPS over IPSec so at the transport level reasonably secure (algorithms supported for encryption etc are old but still reasonably secure in the real world).
The worst security practice they have is that many of the old carwings users had their account passwords set by support to the same password and few bothered to change it. But what you can do with those details (pretty much the same functions the app offer via the API) are of little interest to an attacker interested in anything beyond minor mischief.

Thanks for the informed reply; yeah I read about the API call over http using unhashed VIN numbers, I assumed the migration from CarWings to You+ was to fix that up.

Which apps, if any, do you use?

Any luck with calling them? I'm getting the same message when I enter my VIN.

Kagy, re NissanConnect EV app: is your phone an Android running 8.1.0 by any chance? I have a support ticket open with Nissan about the issue but it has been open for a while now. The same app works fine on my wife's 8.0.0 phone. I suggest that you flag the issue with evuk@nissan-services.eu as I did.

I use LeafManager while the issue is being solved.

It's on the to do list, I sent an email to Nissan Ireland over the weekend, looks like I have to wait for the reg cert

Thank you for contacting Nissan Ireland.

Unfortunately you will have to contact the Nissan Customer Service Helpdesk directly at gb@nissan-services.eu requesting them to unregister your vehicle from the current NissanConnect Account, as you recently purchased the vehicle and as the new owner would like to register it on your account.

In order for them to remove the previous owner’s account on your vehicle, they require you to send them a scanned copy of your Vehicle Licencing Certificate VLC (log book), along with a copy of your photograph ID.

Once they receive the proof of ownership you will be able to fully register for New Nissan Connect

Yep, lineage 8.1, using leafmanager too now, not sure if the paid version would be worth it
