Worried about Cat

I have a 9 year old cat whose behaviour has changed a lot in past week. She usually follows me everywhere and is always by my side and full of energy. Now it is as though she is not in the house at all. She has become very lethargic and spends all her time sleeping upstairs in a corner. She doesn't come down first thing in the morning for her food like she used to but will eventually eat. She has been with the vet and had full bloodwork and x rays which all came back clear. She is now home with me on antibiotics for me to monitor although no infection was found. There has been no improvement and she just seems to want to hide away. It is very upsetting to see her like this and obviously I will be updating the vet who expected her to make a full recovery even though we don't know what is wrong. Has anyone come across this behaviour in cats before. There has been no changes in the house and she is an indoor cat. Thanks.

Is she eating and drinking and using her tray? ( sorry;just reread and good that she IS eating)

Will she let you hold/pet her?

With you on this as it is so worrying.

Only time that has happened with any of my cats there was an injury that was not visible or immediately apparent. Maybe even an Xray would not show it?

She will always let me rub her but today and yesterday hid so far under a bed it was hard to get near her. Sometimes she'll purr when I rub her and other times just a very dead look in her eyes. This is a super affectionate cat who always wants to be with me so hiding away is worrying. She's not great on being held and I wouldn't try now as she is extra sensitive after being overnight at vet. She is a real routine cat so this would have upset her. I got a Feliway diffuser today to plug in to room just to try anything really. I had to coax her down there to give her food and she was looking at going back upstairs but is actually sitting beside me now which is good but she's still miserable and sleeping heavily. Is on loxicom too for any inflammation but so far not the cat I knew only very recently. They were able to rule lots of things out but nothing in so a mystery so far.

There wouldn't be anyone hurting her when you're not there??
It sounds like she's afraid of something/ someone. She's hiding away from something!?

It sounds like she's in pain.
I'm with Grace on this, she could have an injury that you can't see, something she stepped on or got stuck in, something that punctured or tore something inside or out...
I know for my cat, when I see him unwell, I first check his body for puncture wounds or grazes, checking the toes and if nails are there and intact, etc...
He's outdoor/indoor, but I'm sure even a fully indoor cat can injure themselves occasionally, say stepping on slivers of glass or whatever.

How about poisonous flowers or such ? although I guess symptoms should be more obvious with that.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, did the vet check her whole body ?

No 100 per cent not. I think the reason she was hiding was due to feeling unwell plus the trauma of being overnight at the vet. She would hide if she thought I was taking her to the vet. She seems to be coming around somewhat now so fingers crossed it's not just temporary.

If she's an indoor cat then I'd be asking myself if something has happened to upset or frighten her when you weren't there, or has she hurt herself or was there something in her food...
I really do hope that she'll be back to herself soon.
Just read something from NBC news about best feline friend being under investigation because of someone's cat dying. I don't want to scare you, I think this was last year. It came up when I googled best feline friend reviews as I was thinking about trying it, but not now, no way even if it was last year I won't take the chance. 0ity I can't share the link here. Best of luck.

My first thought was also that she was in pain. Yes vet checked her thoroughly as well as extra bloodwork and x rays.

OP; wait and see. Cats and dogs and birds have a way f coping with illness and injury wholeheartedly.

My wee dog once hurtled down a set of concrete steps and the way she entered the resulting hurt was an education. She simply closed down. Terrified me at first then I realised she has more sense than we do when we struggle on. An injured bird is the same.Needs dark and quiet.

See how she is as time passes and just love her as you can without stressing her? You have done all you can.

I agree with the other posters, your cat is in pain or feeling nauseous. Typical cat behaviour to isolate themselves away. However, my cat would always be traumatised after a trip to the vets, so I learned to give her a few days before panicking too much, even though its a worry! You sound like you’re doing all you can, just monitor closely.

Well she seems to be much improved now. She is on the last of an antibiotic tonight. She is behaving much more normally, not hiding away and sitting near me. Will still be keeping a close eye though in case it's just a temporary improvement. My vet specialises in feline medicine and only treats cats so I have a lot of confidence in her. Fingers crossed she'll remain well.

Thats good news. Hopefully she’s on the mend now.

Bring her back to the vet and ask for an x-ray or scan I had a cat very like this once and it turned out she has a cyst in her abdomen that was pulling on her belly she was operated on and was back to normal in a few weeks. An x-ray or always best so you can see what is going on inside.

As per my post she had an x-ray and full bloodwork.
