I was thinking of the above car. The dealer is genuine. He has been servincing it for last five years. Nct etc.. Done. The reviews are mixed of this car. The 12 month warranty is appealing. I know he is honest. My worry is the insurance.. 10 year old cars.. Views on this type of car (diesel) also would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Its about right. The Getz isn’t a bad car, you’re probably paying a little premium for buying from the dealer but they’re very good mechanically. They’re a bit dated nowadays but condition, history and warranty are nice pluses.

That's very Re assuring thanks.... Would you have any view on the insurance point of view! Thank you

I think 15 years is more of a cut off than 10. Should be plenty options to insure a 10 year old car.

Tiny mileage for a 10 year old car.

I’d ask exactly what the warranty covers. If you think the dealer is genuine then that’s fair enough.

It does beg the question around the logic of why anyone would buy a small car designed for mostly city driving with a diesel engine and then only put 8k miles on it per year.

I’d imagine it’s also an import?

Spot on colm! I wonder do the import have any extras

Depends, the diesel in the uk only came in two trim levels, the GSI would be a lower spec to what we got here, but you could also get the diesel in CDX spec which would have aircon and sunroof, alloys, remote locking etc.

They all come with air conditioning as standard in 08 wen the new tax system came in cars like these had really low vrt and tax was sumthing like 120euro took government about 6months to realise this we imported a low mileage ford 1.4tdci and vrt was less than 500euro and was a new enough car with low mileage even thought revenue had made a mistake

Basic uk model is very basic. Worth noting that the higher spec Getz has a more powerful version of the engine too.

It is but very few irish cars even from class above didn't have air conditioning in 08 my friends 08auris is absolutely basic has nothing but on a rare occasion the irish getz wer better

You’d be surprised, the Golf only got standard aircon in 08, Astra didn’t have it, Focus, 308, Megane didn’t either. Don’t think the basic Leon or Octavia got it standard either.

A lot of supermini sized cars in the uk had very very basic trim levels, usually only available in 3 door for whatever reason.
The cars people import to Ireland tend to be well specced, so there is a perception that there are no misery spec cars in the UK.

That was my point the op asked about extras air conditioning in a getz to me is an extra kind of like the small rental cars in likes of Spain and Italy nothing in them but all have air conditioning cos its a must as for the uk ther is poorly specced entry models with the likes of wheel trims and black bumpers but nobody wants them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The OPs car could be either one though :)

I don't get this thread. You mean a little ****ty hyundai getz valued at 3750 when it's only worth 1500..... seriously OP....

Entry level trim in the UK is very basic in some cars but nobody buys them over there. You'd have to go out of your way to find one second hand. The Brits will go for bigger/more powerful engines and more spec than we will although standard specs here have improved enormously over the past few years.

Yap it's the CDX diesel 91k 12 month engine and gearbox warranty.. 2/2019 Nct. Is there anything else I should look for Re warranty or is that standard enough? Thanks to all for helpful posts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Check if it crunches going into reverse. Start the car in neutral and select reverse. This would indicate a ducky pressure plate in the clutch which wouldn’t be unheard of.

Engine and gearbox warranty would be right for a ten year old car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭2012paddy2012

Will do. I drove it last evening it drove fine. He reversed it out..i was standing beside it... Would you hear that noise from outside? Do you think clutch replacement would be covered in warranty.. I will enquire later anyway ..thanks for that tip. Paddy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Clutch wouldn’t usually be covered on a warranty.

    You’d hear the crunch alright.

It's cheaper to run and you have to fill it less which is handy from a convenience pov. Also after 08 petrols actually become hard to find.

We've had diesels in our family which did very little mileage Never had an issue with that.

Define cheaper to run when only doing 8k miles per year? How important is the difference in fuel consumption to someone doing such low mileage? Also there were plenty of small petrol city cars the size of the Getz post 2008 available.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

For us is the difference in filling was once a month or every fortnight. Everything else is the same. A diesel might retain more value when selling it. Also if you do decide to do a long journey you have much greater range.

Basically there are no downsides. A high speed blast now and then keeps the filter happy.

That was our experience anyway. I went for petrol myself as I found they were usually less abused car especially the interiors, and could be cheaper to buy in a higher spec. I don't do much mileage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I don't want to get bogged down about this but my original post/point was about buying a small city car with a diesel engine that only had 8k miles driven on it annually. It's just pointless when there were plenty of petrol options and it wasn't being driven enough to make enough of a difference in fuel costs to make it a factor when buying.

    Anyway moving on.

I'm going to buy this seems the genuine article.... Have a non related query ! I'm selling a motorbike to pay for this which I am doing today... The vehicle licensing certificate for my bike... Do I fill in the new buyers details on this form and post it or give it to the buyer and he fill it in? I think it's me the seller that does it? Appreciate all advice many thanks

    Colm. Many thks. Paddy.

So last query 🔀 just drove it home fabulous little machine like new inside and out... Plenty of poke.. That's not why I bought it!
When seller was doing paperwork he says 12 month mechanical warranty /5000 miles... I said sure hold on that's ridiculous... You could do 5000k in 6 months... He reassures me he will look after anything that's reasonable.. Me thinks. This not with the "paper it's written on " anyhow.. Is that standard enough.. I had though 10 K /12 month warranty was more usual..
I'm very happy with it.. Even though only day 1.

    Thks all again...
    Paddy

12 month warranty sounds better to your average punter than a 12 month or 5000 mile warranty which in reality is a lot less to someone who does even average mileage. Reality is that he could have said it had a 3 year warranty or 5000 miles knowing that majority of drivers will hit the 5000 mile limit a lot sooner than the time limit. Saying he will sort anything out just sounds like "say anything to close the sale" talk, otherwise why not just give the 12 month warranty and cut out the 5000 miles bull****? Without it in writing I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

Most 10 year old cars won't come with a full 12 month comprehensive warranty but given the money he was looking for it I would have thought that price covered a decent warranty. I'd feel a bit short changed by that sneaky 5000 mile limit unless I paid substantially less than what he was asking for it.

No only 800 miles put on since it was bought. Driver would be careful
