So folks we never thought we would see a spell of weather like this considering we have more or less had s***e conditions since last July.

Based in Leitrim here and saw two different lads yday baling nice small square bales of Hay.Crops were light but quality was good.

So down in the likes of the sunny South East is there much meadow knocked for hay?
Leaving aside the heavy rain some counties are getting today we are looking at a forecast of a full week ahead of settled Sunny weather Nationwide with the odd thundery shower thrown in.

Weather was unpredictable this week but I know lads that are regretting not dropping hay

Knocked grass for silage last Thursday, but was too unwell to bale it yesterday. Think we are going to miss most of the rain here, so have had shaken out and plan on a bit of hay. Hay shed here is completely empty for the first time in years. If there are surplus bales at end of year will be handy to have them in hay.

    .

None. Unheard of in this area for years. 1 mile from the coast near tramore. Even the sport horse lads don't go beyond haylage.

Usually knock hay on my place in North Mayo mid to late July. In a good summer we might get a second cut in Mid september

I'm going to cut some grass for hay today. Weather looks good for another 7 days. If it doesn't work out, can always wrap it as haylage.

Would love to get a bit of hay but I have to let it grow first. I have silage ground ready but this is reseeded rygrass which is totally unsuitable for hay

Grass is too leafy yet, any hay that will be made now will be dung in the shed.

Really depends on grass type. I make the best of hay during May most years. Often don't have the weather for anymore later on.

Cut 9 acres yesterday afternoon. Tedded out today. A light crop in a neighbours field that he doesn't want. Not fertilised. Prob end up at 4 -5 bales hay per acre. Average quality at best, old meadow, some rushes and weeds. €5 per bale.

Will keep the best of it it for hay for dry cows, the rest as bedding. Any other year I wouldnt be bothering with it. Need to build up stocks after last winter.

If I talk nice to him, I might get the aftergrass as well :):)

I don't know how anyone can make decent hay with the amount of due in the grass in these mornings...maybe I am not getting something here

    Dry mornings. :pac:

You're probably not too far and all from a river?
How near or far from a river or moisture evaporated from land the previous day can influence how much dew fall you get.

There's none or not much dew on the grass when I go for the cows in the morning. Sahara conditions.
Grass is still tipping along nicely though.

Only the top few inches of the ground is dry here in Cork anyway. Hard to imagine how you could save green grass this time of the year as hay when the ground is barely dried out.

Baled hay today. Fit as could be. See the horse hay specialists down the road are making hay too. (Them lads take no chances with hay quality either). In County Meath.

I'm making 4x4's but horse hay guys are making small squares. Not sure what difference it makes if it's not fit for small bales then it's not fit. Very little dew here in the mornings and a week of bright breezy days with temps above 20°

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭kk.man

I had to leave my shoes out to dry for a day aand changed my socks fter herding yesterday morning and the late evening is not much better. I suppose some parts of the country are different when it comes to grass due.

46 round bales off the 9 acres. Baled up yesterday dry as snuff. All stacked loosely into sheds. A fantastic spell of weather. No rain here since last Monday week. Got 77 bales of silage done as well last Saturday. A great start to the summer. Roll on.

Looks like good spell of weather will soon come to end....up here in NW we have had less rain than Midlands or lower half of country for sure in last 3 weeks.
Have many people who tend to try and save hay to sell each year got it during the dry spell or were crops too light to touch yet?

I would buy hay every year for sheep in small square bales or round bales ,tend to leave it till Dec/Jan to buy it when I have space freed up to store it.

Cork. Who is paying that for hay? Horsey folk?

Is that 35 euro in the field?

Even allowing for the fact that a lot of sheds of hay got emptied out this Spring that is a bit saucy of a price.....would want to be top quality horse or sheep hay for that.

Yup off the field. Nice green hay. Lads were paying €5 and €45 for absolute sh1te 2 months ago why would you sell quality for any less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,327 ✭✭✭emaherx

why would you sell quality for any less.

It's all about demand. obviously still plenty of demand in you're area.

Some people have hay made and no storage for it,Often saw a good year like this and the the aftergrass growing up around the bales for the want of storage,
be interesting to see what the demand is.
Loads of it on donedeal at 25-30

Every year you see the best of bales let to rot in the field. Hate to see it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭White Clover

If lads don't have storage for it why don't they wrap it? For 3 or 4 euro per bale it's great value.

Yea, sickens me too. if they're not drawn within a week they're usually left.
Pushed to a ditch then.......you need the facilities to store if you make hay for sale, it's a limited market, straw is the roughage of choice now

Have a couple of acres down since last Wednesday evening. Got a shower in Friday and no other rain. It's fairly saved now only couple small green spots.
What I'm wondering is would I need a bit of sun today or tomorrow before baling or would it be ok to bale it in overcast cloudy conditions. (small square bales)
    Tia

Well I remember years back that something similar happened. Lads made hay instead of silage. Come the winter they hadn't enough silage made as the second cuts were light
