With the expectation that all traffic crossing the atlantic from 2019 shall be monitored by Space Based ADS-B, how will this affect Ballygirreen?

Is the requirement for serviceable HF and SELCAL being dropped at the same time?

Logic would suggest that this should follow with the aim of being able to increase the service provided and increase capacity over the Atlantic significantly. This cost per aircraft of sat based communications would be offset by the potentially more efficient routings and therefore fuel saved and time saved.

Given that with HF currently being a backup to CPDLC, would it be continued as backup in the event of satellite issues/failure/transponder issues on flights?

Not all translatlantic flights even have ADS-B at present. Plenty of Gulfstreams etc without it

If an aircraft logs in with CPDLC, I don't believe that they are also required to do a SELCAL check.

True, but there is a modification to install it and it is mandatory in many Asian countries and shall be mandatory for the Atlantic in 2020.

My curiosity came from this article.... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-5771567/How-airliners-guided-Nats-vast-area-Atlantic-thats-radar-range.html

Thank you both for the correction and reference.

Is HF not the PRIMARY means of communication? Not a backup at all. Hence the requirement for a selcal check and also the need to advise if it is u/s which may lead to a reclearance. The PAN/MAYDAY functions of CPDLC are only an attention getter. Push the buttons but expect the HF to be lighting up within a few seconds as the radio operators seeks information via voice.
