Anyone else getting the black squares?

Fairly often on boards.ie, I am plagued by black squares or rectangles that just hover around over top of posts that I am trying to read. Anyone else having this sort of issue? How do I get rid of them?

Serious answers appreciated although I'm game to let this wander off into a pointless discussion.

    You're probably dying

I started getting the black squares on a different site (only) last week. They still happen, especially if scrolling. I wonder is it some virus or malfunction in my computer rather than the site?

    Sounds vaguely racist.

Do the black squares come with grey dots? :)

The Hermann Grid illusion is taking over.

It's a Chrome issue. Try turning off hardware acceleration

Yes. In chrome when i have a lot of tabs open.

Closing some tabs makes them go away.

I'm getting them in place of ads on mobile, have been for a while. More noticeable when I quick scroll through a thread.

I don't know anything about black squares MT but two thumbs up for the weather posts! Love em.

(And yes, I appreciate the irony of posting something completely unhelpful to someone looking for help who themselve posts very helpful posts on a daily basis)

Post a screenshot of it, but don't forget to close your Pornhub tabs first.

    It's not right Joe

    Then why AH!? :pac:

Seriously though, what browser are you using? What addons do you have installed? Does a reboot work (you'd be surprised how often "turn it off and on again" actually works!)

Had problems logging on to boards.ie a couple of weeks ago using Firefox (wouldn't fully load the home page, and refused to switch to the legacy site which is the only one I use :pac: ) so I changed over to Chrome and got the black boxes every time. Whoever's updated whatever, I'm back on Firefox now and all is clean and tidy. :)

That's probably why the HSE website wouldn't give you that Medical Card - it knew there was no point! :D

    Why Opera?! :p

But at the top left, click the "O" then down to settings. Click "show advanced settings" on the bottom left. In the searchbox type "hardware" and the option is there.

    (*uninstalls opera*)

TODAY ... Continued black spots for some, possibly 10 to 20 mm likely but smaller black spots in south Leinster and western Canada. The black spot should ease by late afternoon and some clearing may begin before sunset.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, warmer, slight chance of black spot inland.

WEDNESDAY ...Very low chance of black spot or sun spot. High chance of a severe outbreak of freckles.

Turning off hardware acceleration seems to have worked for me. Chrome. Windows 8.

How did you do that though I've windows 10 so maybe not identical? When I go into settings under system I can see the option to "use hardware accelertion wehn available". I unticked that but still getting the black boxes on boards and other sites

Something pretty much the same I did. So far it's working but maybe it will come back as it was intermittent

Well you guessed right on one thing, I am using chrome -- so having achieved that level of accuracy, wander over to the weather forum, you'll fit right in.

Another good suggestion was relation of black rectangles to tabs open. Right now I have just this and no black rectangles. I guess facebook, various weather forums, and tardis maintenance forum are using too much memory.

From what I've heard, porn uses too much mammary. But I am afraid to look, in case it messes with the empty cranium.

MT thanks a million for this thread and Discodog and Malayam for the advice! Black squares gone and saved a trip to the computer repair shop. Didn't work first as needed a restart too. Computer shop would have been a hassle because all my passwords saved on sites so would have had to delete all and come up with new ones. Usually ignore AH's but new respect now!

I was glad of thread too, as the black boxes were worrying, and the advice from Discodog was welcome. I just hope turning off hardware acceleration doesn't mean something else is not working properly now, unseen in the works, but all seems okay so far.
