    I'm staying near Nice France for a few days and would like to take a day trip to visit Italy, we may stay overnight. I dont want to spent half a day in the car, so where would be a good place to go?

    There are plenty of little seaside towns on the way toward Genoa. Wife wants to go to Milan but I think it's too far.

    Any recommendations?

    I have done something similar in the past by rail, great views and zero hassle.

    SNCF: THE "ISABELLE" RAIL PASS: IN SUMMER SEASON
    From July 1st to September 30th, the SNCF's "Carte Isabelle" enables passengers to make an unlimited number of trips in any one day on all trains offering seats (except TGV express trains) in 1st or 2nd class, from Théoule-sur-Mer to Vintimiglia and from Nice to Tende.
    On sale at the train stations: €12.

    There is an excellent train service from Nice into many Italian towns.

    San Remo and Alassio are nice towns with reasonable beaches. San Remo is also affluent, with plenty of high fashion. Hotels own chunks of the beaches, but there's always a public stretch.

    Ventimiglia is the first Italian town across the border. It has a great market, with plenty of 'dubious' handbag and leather goods that the ladies will love. Cheap and good quality replicas. I think Friday is the big market day.

    Milan is not very nice. Beach in Nice is also poor. Better sand to the east and west of it.

    Ventimiglia = Ventmille in French

    Nice = Nizza in Italian

    Done it before (driving).

    The likes of Alassio and Albenga are a fair spin from Nice. Menton is a really lovely place with traces of French style and character.
    There is a tiny little village in the Italian hills called Apricale. Was voted one of the most beautiful villages in italy.
