Hey, id really appreciate some opinions here. Buying a new qashqai & dealer has said that there is no gurantee with trade in price of a diesel model in 2 years time & advised to go with 1.2turbo petrol engine. Does anyone have any info on this engine? 2k difference to change now between diesel & petrol.

I assume increased running costs but decreased service costs? I wouldnt be the most knowledgable person when it comes to cars..

Does your driving style/mileage warranty a diesel car?

Nissan announced yesterday that they won't be selling any new diesel passenger vehicles in Europe from 2020 or 2021. However there will still be a demand for them on the second hand market here especially as petrol/electric vehicles currently are not suitable for everyone. And I wouldn't say the 1.2 petrol engine may have lower maintenance costs as like the diesel it still has the likes of a turbo and high pressure injectors stuck on it.

But if your driving style and mileage don't require a diesel then the 2k saving on the petrol model makes alot of sense. You'll really have to do some maths to see if it's worth the extra 2k.

If your mileage is in excess of 25k a year then diesel will be better but you'd need to keep the car for at least 3 years to break even on what you'd save on the petrol version in capital cost and what you'd spend extra on fuel.

This assumes the gap between fuels remains which is unlikely.

If your mileage drops from 25k a year then petrol becomes much more cost effective long term even with the current gap.

Thanks so much for your input Lantus & Baz26. Having done the sums the petrol makes more sense. Really appreciate your help.

If going petrol then why not look at hybrid?

    Toyota have RAV and C-HR
    Kia have Niro

If you are going petrol then hybrid a great option.

Full electric(Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro) wont be shipping till next year

My wife has the 1.2 Qashqai, there’s plenty of poke in it for around Dublin, there’s a few flat spots if caught in the wrong gear but it’s a far superior engine compared with the 1.6 in the old model which she also had. She’s done 9,000kms in a year and a half so petrol was always on the cards. No issues with the engine anyway!

The cheapest hybrid Rav4 is €10500 more than the cheapest petrol Qashqai to be fair.

The CH-R is more Juke than Qashqai size.

I quite like the Niro hybrid and the fact that it has a DSG type gearbox.still a good bit smaller than a Qashqai though.

Toyota are doing deals on the hybrid so I would take the internet price with pinch of salt...worth a look

Yes C-HR is smaller, but no real list of requirement so might suit, Qashqai ain’t a whole lot bigger

Hyundai kona petrol might be option if looking at compact suv...they are nice, sat in one other day

Niro plug in hybrid is excellent value at circa 31k....

The Rav4 is being replaced with a new model towards the end of this year. You'd want to be getting an existing one very cheap to be tempted as they feel very dated now. But I'd doubt they would be knocking near 10k off one plus the Rav4 hybrid hasn't been a huge seller for Toyota here either, a 1.2 petrol Qashqai will be alot easier to sell in a few years than a Rav4 with a 2.5 petrol engine in Ireland, hybrid or not.

My pal recently got a Niro, took it for a spin and was pleasantly surprised. Build quality has really improved for Kia. The rear space is actually quite big too.

I doubt that....hybrid has a better MPG...no matter how small an engine you put into the car.

The hybrid is automatic as well which is huge bonus as most people I know wouldn't touch a manual anymore.

Even thou the Qashqai got a bit of a facelift last year it is still not a whole pile better to the Rav4. It comes down to personal taste. I drove a Qashqai, had it for 4 years. Loved it, done exactly what I wanted it to do. Got my parents to buy one.

My brother in law has the Rav 4, bought brand new this year, hybrid of course. My sister in law has the hybrid C-HR...both of them love it and the MPG is great.....

The Rav 4 as mentioned is getting a face lift next year, the new hybrid is still a 2.2ltr engine. You could get a serious deal if they have one in stock, just let them know they wont sell it with new one coming out

If I was in market today for one of them, I would actually go for the Niro PHEV....or really my favorite but would have to be second hand is the Outlander PHEV G4XH....they are great

Or maybe the OP just wants a Qashqai.

Missus had two of the 1.2 petrol Qashqais 141 and 151 we'd be low mileage drivers and petrol suited us. Both bought from new and thankfully both gone from us now (thats another story)

on size we recently tested the Toyota C-HR hybrid, loved it but it is tight inside the cabin, much smaller than the Qashqai

in the end we went for the new 3008 GT line again in petrol 1.2

Just giving some alternatives.....OP can take them or leave them

As I said I had a Qashqai for 4 years, the older model but it had the 1.6 diesel engine in it which wasn't a great engine. The car itself was perfect but just got too small for our growing family....

My parents bought a 141 with the newer diesel engine and it is great, doesn't get used much as they use my mother Leaf....

If going for a petrol and I was the OP I would be considering hybrid very hard, if petrol that means they are probably doing low milage and city driving...exactly what a hybrid is made for.

With the push from the government to move towards "greener" cars then the hybrid ticks the bill so in a few years time should hold its value better than a standard petrol.....

As I said, if OP just wants a Qashqai then best of luck, they are a great car. If not some options above

I was driving an xtrail with the 1.6 diesel a few weeks ago and it was a peach of an engine. Sadly it was 2wd and it couldn’t get the power down. Torque steer and wheel spin all over the shop.

Thats the new 1.6 diesel....I mean the old 1.6 they had in the early Qashqai's. I had it in a 4 wheel drive Qashqai....the 4 wheel drive was a waste of time as well for my requirement, just added weight

I got serviced once and garage gave me a 1.5 Qashqai, way better drive...

My brother has the 7 seater xtrail. Going to bring for spin this weekend

Thanks so much for your input & info. Considering my options but am pretty set on sticking with qashqai as the car requires disabled driver modifications & the Nissan dealer is by far the easiest i have ever dealt with getting these mods sorted. Thanks all, much appreciated

Best of luck, as mentioned the Qashqai is a great car....

    You will love it....

There will be more of a demand for petrol in a couple of years and 2k is a nice little saving but if your doing a lot of mileage then go with diesel.

    Not 100% correct.....

Hybrid is better option even if higher mileage, it depends on what sort of driving you are doing......

If you’re claiming VRT on a disabled driver/passenger scheme then petrol can work out better. As hybrids pay so little VRT there’s not as much of a saving to be made vs the RRP.

But the op is set on a qashqai so hybrid isn't an option
