Nice short stage today starting from the house of some bloke called Francis. After the drama yesterday could be an interesting day to see what the Aussies do.

Very interesting medium mountain stage. Starting from the most famous town of Assisi, the riders cross the Appennines again, this time towards east. The first climb of the day is Passo Cornello (GPM3, 8.4 km at 4.4%), a climb that only has one serious ramp, but that should be enough to define the breakaway of the day. A breakaway that has very good chances to make it to the end. After the descent, 40 km of descending false flat bring to the second climb of the day, Valico di Pietra Rossa (GPM3, 9.6 km at 3.7%), another very gentle climb, rarely over 6% gradient. The best however is about to start: the next difficulty is the intermediate sprint of Filottrano (in memory of Michele Scarponi), which lies after a 1.8 km wall with an average gradient of 7.8%. This wall features a 800m section at 11.8%, so it's pretty serious. It tops at 30 km to go, and it's the first of 4 walls, including the finish. The second wall comes at 13 km to go, in San Paterniano, and it's roughly 1 km at 9-10% (no official info). After it, some rolling terrain will bring the riders to Osimo, where 2 walls are still waiting. The first is perhaps the most interesting: Via Costa del Borgo is a 300m cobbled stretch at 13.2% average, coming at 5 km to go, 2 of which are a descent. At the bottom, less than 1 km of flat will lead to the final wall. Osimo (GPM4, 1.8 km at 6.4%) includes a real wall of 500m at 12.4%, followed by 1.3 km of easier climbing (still featuring some serious ramps), that flattens out towards the finishing line.

    Wonder will the breakaway last

de Marchi is a great breakaway artist but Luis Leon is very strong

Not a hope. The peleton are flying again. There have been very few "easy" days for the peleton this Giro. At this rate they will all be totally knackered by the time they hit Zoncolon on Saturday

For the purposes of search it'd be good to have Giro in the thread title.

It should be a very exciting finish... Some steep ramps and cobbles. I can see Yates gaining a few more seconds

He's just about giving himself a chance. Tom will put 90-120 seconds into him in the TT in 6 days time. I know hes first in the GC but at the current rate tom is in pink on the 22nd

Agreed it'll be touch and go come the TT but he's giving himself a chance I think.

Yates and Tom very strong, Tom getting stronger and stronger it seems.

Froome is eerily looking like the days when he was at Barloworld. Looks like Bambi on the bike again, looking pudgier and more tanned like he did back then and his performances are echoing those days too. Amazing.

Yates is now 47 seconds ahead of Tom.

Yates should gain 30-60 seconds on Zoncolan and he might get another few seconds on Sunday.

Tom should be in pink after the ITT...

... BUT there are still three mountain top finishes to go after it.

    It's gonna be great! :D

This will be key. Toms weight is killing him. When yeats one his first stage he was putting out 370 for the last 5k. Tom was putting out 430 and losing ground.

Amazing from Yates but I'm really wondering if he can keep this form up for the rest of the race. Gut tells me he's going to slip up somewhere.

If he wins his first Giro in such fashion it's got to go down as one of the most impressive wins of this tour.

    Exciting days ahead!

Bad day for Michael Woods (Team [insert really long team name] Cannondale) as he dropped seven places from 9th to 16th.

Oh no. Poor Carlton Kirby nailing his colors to the mast again that will surely come crashing down.

KIrby is the biggest ass ever
Poor Yates more like as with Kirby on his case he is bound to lose the Giro :)

He'll probably need to latch onto Viviani again and use the Quickstep train. Think he'll go close hopefully

The use of sprint trains have been weird enough in the Giro so far. Viviani hasn't really been using his team mates in the last kilometre of the stage. He latched on to the Bora train (and Sam) for his two wins. And then Sam was on the back of Viviani, who in turn was latched on to Modolo, for his win.
