Spare wheel options for F11 BMW 520d

I recently picked up an F11 520d M-Sport with the 19” wheels. It currently has runflat a fitted which are all pretty good but as I do a lot of driving I want to have the security of a spare. Recently I got a flat on the M7 and had to drive about 30 mins on the punctured run flat, when I got it to the tyre shop the tyre was damaged beyond repair ( which I actually seen for myself so not a case of trying to sell me a tyre ) leaving me with very few options being 150 miles away from home. In the end I had to buy another runflat which wasn’t cheap, had I been at home I would have been able to get the tyre at close to cost price..

Anyway, I want to explore the possibility of buying a spare either a space saver ( do they even come in that size??? ) or just get a spare rim and keep it in the boot for such an occasion. By getting a spare I can also ditch the runflats which I do t really have an issue with apart from them being a lot more expensive than standard tyres.

Anyone got a spare wheel in their F10/F11??

They can be got. However you'll need to tie it down in the boot as there is no space well for it in the boot so its basically toss it in the back.
Run-flats are grand for when you get a puncture in that you can drive away but trying to get a place that sells them then at short notice is pretty hard.
How come your tyre was so damaged? normally you can drive away at upto 80kph on them and as long as the sidewall wasn't punctured they can be repaired.

That model has been designed to be on run flats. She may feel a bit wobbly on the less stiff non run flats.

On he contrary run flats are a ****e drive. I wouldn't run them and haven't on any BMW I've had.

Swap he lot use one of the compressor gunk kits for flats job done. Hate run flats terrible ride terrible price

That's grand till you run over something and a massive hole comes in the tyre. Gunk is not a substitute for a spare, or runflats, and the only reason why manufacturers are doing it is to cheat emissions by potentially leaving their customer stranded.

That's all well and good but I've been driving for 2 decades and that's nerve once happened. Has it happened to you....

There's alot of what it's and tbh the chances are better for winning the lotto.

If you do happen to be the most unlucky person to run over and explode your whole tyre. Your insurance has call out assists. Most insurances throw it in now.

There isn't anything worth running run flats for your not in the Gobi desert

Happened 2 days after putting brand new tyres on. Drove over a bit of metal and blew an 25mm hole in the tyre.

Insurance recovery is now an optional extra, checked for 3 different people recently, and what happens when you get a puncture out of phone coverage?

I've been driving a BMWs for years now with run flats and they really have come on leaps and bounds regarding ride and comfort.

As for getting a spacesaver, they are pretty hard to come by second hand as they are in demand and a main dealer will charge you a hefty price for a new one. Getting Breakdown Assistance with your insurance or the likes of AA membership might be an alternative.

Thanks for all the replies. I’m heading over to a BMW breakers this week so will ask him what he has. I may just go down the road of the can of gunk route, even though I’m not mad about the stuff.

I bought a spare wheel kit for my E61 and also used it on my F11. Used to keep it in the boot but since I have a saloon now I don't bother. In the shed gathering dust now. Will sell to you if you want? Used only once.

Have you had non run flats on an F10 out of interest? What is the newest model you had them on?
