China to Eurovision: 2 wangs don't make it right

Bit of a tiff at the moment over the Irish entry as a Chinese eurovision broadcaster refuses to show it due to its homosexual performance, Eurovision responds by denying them the right to show the second semi and the final itself.
The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) has tonight announced it has terminated its contract with the Chinese broadcaster Mango TV after it failed to broadcast Ireland's Eurovision entry.

On Tuesday the Chinese broadcaster, part of the second biggest channel in the country, edited out the Irish Eurovision entry over its depiction of a gay relationship.

Ryan O'Shaughnessy performed 'Together', qualifying Ireland for the final for the first time in five years.

Ireland's Eurovision entry has made headlines as the first in the contest's 63 year history to feature a same-sex couple.

China has strict broadcast rules banning any depiction of gay relationships.

That's a truly excellent thread title. :) I came for the racism, but stayed for the homophobia!

Well done to the EBU, we need more of that kind of thing in public life.

I think this story has a life span of just a few days ....

Edit: Okay, so I got that wrong.

But I have to say that I don't know how the Chinese tv station twigged that the dance routine had homosexual connotations when for a decade every single man you see in the audience at the eurovision is gay, 90%+ anyway. Sometimes it doesn't take one to know one when something is so obvious.

I have to say I though the song was quite good (by eurovision standards i.e. low) and had a good chance to win anyway although it wasn't favourite, but I can't help but think that this controversy makes it a dead cert.

You'd wonder will it be the kind of thing that will cost us votes in the final.

Imagine how certain nationalties will react to it. Over 40 countries are voting.

"This is Eurovision, it's inclusive of every single person."

Gee, is that why eurovision has many conservative-themed and/or religious performances? Or any at all? Funny who the "every single person" definition excludes.

Or it might even get us votes, you'd wonder since Conchita won it a few years back .

Just saw the Indo is saying that the betting odds have shortened dramatically, from 250/1 to 14/1!

Just a shame no one started a eurovision thread to discuss all stuff related.

I feel this is a big enough issue to deserve a thread of it's own, so that the main Eurovision thread doesn't get bogged down in social politics..

I’m told the yearly moustache parade celebrating the YMCA is gay these days. Pride it’s called nowadays. Probably after the U2 song.

The irony here is that China have to implement one/two child policies to keep the population down - in 20 years time the will be paying government grants to gay couples.

Well it's only half those odds in the shops @17 (16/1). But don't ever put more than a few spare notes on the novelty market that is Europop, and certainly not on Ireland to win the whole thing. The song is ok, but tires after repeat listens.

Even when backing the (near-certaintites) value bets of trump & brexit, I'd only ever back them as part of a low-stake mult-line accumulator array.

Sure they'll pick up a few of the 'fingers up to China' votes from the liberal left across the EU, but it's a near impossible task to beat the wacky waving cats of Isr, or the pony tail waving red-hot firestorm that is Cyprus.

Likely finishing place 6/7th at very best.

Classic..... im really stretching to see it but just cant work out how me saying you have a victim complex equates to me being offended by your ridiculous remarks.

If any country wanted to they could put on a religious or conservative act, again i would love someone to explain what that would look like, but i then bet if it got no votes you'd be crying discrimination again because..... victim complex

On a serious note, we were told we would get this sort of song once the marriage thing got done.
Promotion of being homosexual in pop media and even children's books about homosexual people.
I am not sharing an opinion on the rights and wrongs either way, but the world is going this way, there will be more promotion like this and so China and Russia and the rest of them are either going to not broadcast / publish western materials or they wil change to be more like us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

Not big on the gay rights the Chinese. Divils for the ould abortion though.

I like that the genuine eyebrow-raiser of a Chinese TV network showing a European song contest to its viewers is arrived at through the 'front door' of the minor gay censorship aspect. Could this be an agenda piece I'm wondering?

I also like the 200 million viewer stat is sourced from the TV stations of Europe, the very same outfits that stage the f**king thing.

Who else would you like to produce the viewing figures? There's no other way to track this across all the countries as there's no cross border equivalent of the US Nielsen system

I'm wholly in favour of editing the gay out of Eurovision.

It would make the program a tolerably watchable 30 minutes.

Correction to previous note, Ireland now currently ranked as 3rd fav at 8/1.
This is subject to change (as of 2pm Fri), as we haven't heard some other countries do their thing.

A prime example of how to get ahead in the Eurovision...

Eurovision is probably the most stereotypically homosexual event on the calendar. Maybe coming second to Pride.

Anything which has even a sniff of equal rights about it is a massive vote winner.

This Chinese stunt could even be enough to put us over the top. I might watch the thing now.

They are not responsible for the song entrants that countries send so there should be no issue of religious or conservative themed songs are entered.

    That's how being inclusive works.
