I am mounting a tv on a wall with wooden studs.
Instructions call for a 5.5mm drill bit but I only have a 5mm.
Will that be close enough to work okay? Diy noobie here so sorry if it's a stupid question!

Are you drilling the hole to insert a plug?
If so, 5mm will be grand - if you cant get the plug in - wiggle the drill a TINY bit to widen the hole the extra .5mm

If you are pre-drilling the timber to be followed by a screw straight into the stud, you should be ok too.

    Or just buy the 5.5.....

If you're screwing straight into the stud then there's no need to pre drill just screw straight in.

    That might spilt the timber

No, it won't. I've been doing it everyday in work for 20 years.

I was going off the notion he might be working straight from the instructions.
    ....
Depends on the screws I suppose as to whether it will split it. Some are better than others. I suppose if you're screwing into a hidden stud you will never know if it splits or not ... until your telly falls down :) (but yeah - i would never bother pre-drilling a stud)

If you're going into the stud, definitely don't use plugs. Either drill no holes or drill tiny pilot holes, like with a 1-2mm bit.

I'd imagine the 5.5mm bit is meant to drill a concrete wall for red rawlplugs but you said you're going into a studded wall.
In that case, you need to find the stud and do as Fred Funk advised in post #4.
How big and heavy is the TV?

Also, you shouldn't be using 5.5mm screws. You'd want something like these, if they didn't come with the bracket, you'll get them in BnQ or somewhere like that.

FWIW, if anyone's looking for a bracket, I've used a few of these and found them to be excellent. Plus they cost less than €20 including delivery.

These bolts (coach) are overkill for this. As Fred says, straight into the stud once located with regular screws. No need to pre-drill.
