Job Seekers Allowance & Rent-A-Room Scheme

    Can a house owner, in receipt of €1,000 p.m. from the Rent-A-Room Scheme qualify for job seekers allowance?

    He can certainly apply for JA and will be means tested in the normal manner.

    However, given that the R-a-R income of €1,000 p/m will be included as household income, he is likely to be assessed as being over the income limit. But it would all depend on the make-up of the household and what the total household income is. (I'm not sure how monthly mortgage repayments are treated in the means test - splinter65 will probably be able to give you a more definite answer when he/she visits this thread!).

    Thanks Squatter, I had read that CI page but the means test info is not definitive.
    I also rang CI and could not get a definitive figure.
    They said the Net rent of circa €220 pw would be treated as self-employment income.

    There is no mortgage - No other income - She has an unemployed 18yo son.

    She is presently on the 12 week transition period coming out of Carers Allowance.

    OK so the household income is €220 per week. As this exceeds the weekly JA payment of €198 a week, she probably won't be eligible for a JA payment.

    Presumably her 18 year old son is no longer in education so she can't claim for him as a dependant. Is he claiming any welfare payment in his own right?

    He is not in education - I think he may be claiming.

    I think the back-to-work scheme would be her best option. It's something she was going to do anyway.
    The full rate Carer's Allowance (having stopped caring duties) is a qualifying payment for the scheme.
