Had anyone failed the nct over a warning light, that want on Before the test. Brought my 04 Lexus yesterday 7/5, & that's what happened. Luckily for me I'm in the trade & could sort it, but how can't and ended up paying to have it fixed, even thought THE TEST CAUSED IT! You'd think the guys doing the test would have some qualifications. Sorry for rant, #Fummin

    What light??

Warning light is a visual requiring no payment as far as i recall

If the engine light or oil warning light comes on they won't do the smoke test or exhaust test and you'll have to do the whole test again - was this the issue with yours?

I think the OP is saying he had to pay to get the issue fixed after the NCT test caused the light to come on in the first place.

Without knowing what the light came on, it's hard to see how the test caused something that wasn't about to happen anyway.

Presumably the light came on because of a fault - the test or tester can hardly be blamed for that.

is an 04 Lexus really a Classic now?

How can the NCT cause a light to come on? I smell BS

Airbag lights often come on for the nct because nobody has moved the drivers seat in years until the tester does, and the wires pull the connection apart.
Also if the car has a previous fault, the revving for the test, especially the smoke test, can be enough to flag a code that was borderline before.

If the car has a previous fault, then that's not the fault of the test
And if you disconnect an airbag by mistake then you can surely plug it back in simply.

Yup, pretty much what I said above - can't see how the tester can be blamed.

The warning light was on before the test by my reading of the ops first sentence.

    Like mechanic qualifications maybe?

I'm reading "want on" as "wasn't on"

Tbh, I can't really make heads or tails of the OP

The light (what light?) went on before the test, but the test caused it?

I was in the same boat before with NCT when they accidentally the damn thing!

...could not resist:) But if a car cannot take the "beating" of the NCT test then it is not roadworthy.

That's a very poorly worded rant, can you please correct it?

It makes no sense that you state the warning light was on before the test, yet you are blaming the NCT for the fault?:confused: Are you really in the trade? or just happen know someone handy with a scanner? If you were in the trade then you should know what warning lights would have resulted in a fail and also that every NCT tester is a qualified mechanic.

I had to re read this for my own benefit, and have discovered the hidden message i think.

Re read the bold words....want becomes weren't and how becomes now

    Makes sense now.

Warning light came on during the test, it failed. OP thought he could fix it, but he could not, and had to pay someone to fix it. As he is in the trade, he probably got mates rates on the solution.

So i would say that's a good result.

Fat chance of a re imburse from the NCT

...on a sidenote...does anyone know definitively if an airbag light is an NCT fail?

I'm guessing it was an existing fault that was sort of repaired, but came back when the NCT started poking around.

And of course, without the OP telling us what light it is, I'll assume that it was caused by the OP's poor maintenance :pac:

I had a look at that already and all I could find on 'airbag' is that the malfunction light must be working...and mine definitely is! :D

Also, on reading the same section, how are they meant to be testing all the warning systems listed - e.g. brake fluid level warning system??

Check page 94; it looks like if there's a "brake fluid warning light", they'll check it. I assume they say it so that should it fail, they can fail you, but if it's not there, they won't be checking?

    MALFUNCTION INDICATORS

    Method of Testing

Ensure the malfunction indicators for Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), Airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Lock
Braking System (ABS), Electronic Braking System (EBS), Parking Brake, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Electronic Power
Steering (EPS) or brake fluid warning light are in working order

As I said - how the fook do they do this? E.G. Are they gonna drain some of the brake fluid or what? Disconnect your airbags? Let the air out of your tyres??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Ensure the malfunction indicators **blah** are in working order
Start engine. Light comes on, light goes off. Test done.
