I've been talking to a company who run summer camps about working over the summer. I'm currently in full time education. Each summer I have to come off Back to Education and return to Jobseekers Allowance, but this summer there is the possibility of work a few days a week, thats also in the same field I'm studying which is great in regards work experience.

The problem is from what I've been told it will be on a casual basis. They will call me and ask if I'm available to work when they need me. The work will be sound engineering work, so recording singers, bands and music in general. At most I'll be working 2 or 3 days a week, they only run these music session a few times a week.

As they can't offer me a full time contract and they can't even promise me a steady working timetable, what are my options here? Do I just receive payment as usual when I do work and notify the Welfare department of days I have worked? Do I need a contract of some sort from this company?

You need to get some indication as to when you might do your initial couple of days and what you'll be paid. Then pop into your local office and explain.
They might stop your payment for a week or two until you start bringing in proper payslips but by the sound of it, it's a golden opportunity.
