Compensation for late arrival

Is compensation available for a late arrival of a Ryanair flight if you still took that flight? I travelled from Knock to Liverpool yesterday afternoon and the flight was delayed for technical reasons at the Liverpool end The flight was due to land at 16:45, but eventually landed at 20:34. I was looking up Ryanair's compensation policy, and it seems that they only pay out if you either cancelled your trip or took an alternative flight. Surely they don't expect you to put up with a four hour delay without some sort of gesture? All we got was a €5 refreshment voucher, which doesn't go far in an airport departure lounge.

Two weeks since we put in for our compensation from a 5 hour delay and haven't heard a peep yet, from reading online people have heard back within 10 days though.

I'm waiting since December for Aer Lingus for a cancelled flight

I'd say you'd be entitled to eu261 compensation of €250. Apply from their own online forms as they usually get back quickly.

They will probably say it was Unavoidable Circumstances as it was a technical problem, but don't let that stop you. Keep at them.

We had a delay a few weeks ago after an earlier aircraft failure, the aircraft that was scheduled for our flight arrived in on time, but was used to convey the passengers from the earlier flight, and our flight was delayed until considerably later.

I claimed EU261 compensation for the delay the next morning, it was acknowledged within 24 hours, and we had a notification that the claim was accepted and we would be paid within 10 days less than 4 days later, and the payment came through within the time scale they had notified.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

You "may" be entitled to compensation, however the max for that flight is €250 and that is reduced by 50% if the delay was under 4 hours.

Also If an airline can prove that the delay was caused by an extraordinary circumstance which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures were taken, no compensation will be payable.

Thanks for all the answers/replies. I looked at Ryanair's website and it seems to suggest that you can only claim if you cancelled your trip or took an alternative flight, not if you took the original flight. I'll look at it again sometime tomorrow, when I'm back home.

Not so, the rules also apply where the flight is delayed, and the passengers travelled on it. That was the case for us recently, we did eventually travel on the booked flight, albeit considerably delayed, and there was no question or issue with the compensation, which duly arrived into the bank account.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Ryanair will do their best to wriggle out of this, so don't trust anything they say on their website.

I had the same experience as Irish Steve late last year. Flight delayed for 4+ because of technical problems. Ryanair made no attempt to argue about the compensation, they paid up straight away.

I would be very interested in hearing your direct experience with Ryanair (FR) in relation to this matter.

I've found Ryanair great with EU261. My experience with Aer Lingus was so bad I now avoid them if possible

Thanks for all the replies. I put in my claim this morning, and it hasn't been bounced back to me yet so I'll have to wait and see.

I submitted an official claim to Ryan Air for a delayed flight. This was almost a month ago and all I got to date was response thanking me for my email enquiry and that they would be in touch once my claim has been assessed.

    The email came from donotreplyeu261@ryanair.com

Has anybody in a similar situation followed up with Ryan Air and, if so, how did you contact them to follow up on the claim?

Where does it state that you have a right to compensation when the flight is delayed? Reading the info i only see:

    Delay
    1. When an operating air carrier reasonably expects a flight to be delayed beyond its scheduled time of departure:
    (a) for two hours or more in the case of flights of 1500 kilometres or less; or
    (b) for three hours or more in the case of all intra-Community flights of more than 1500 kilometres and of all other flights between 1500 and 3500 kilometres; or
    (c) for four hours or more in the case of all flights not falling under (a) or (b),
passengers shall be offered by the operating air carrier:
    (i) the assistance specified in Article 9(1)(a) and 9(2); and
(ii) when the reasonably expected time of departure is at least the day after the time of departure previously announced, the assistance specified in Article 9(1)(b) and 9(1)(c); and
(iii) when the delay is at least five hours, the assistance specified in Article 8(1)(a).

    Article 9 states
    1. Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered free of charge:
    (a) meals and refreshments in a reasonable relation to the waiting time;
    (b) hotel accommodation in cases
    - where a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary, or
    - where a stay additional to that intended by the passenger becomes necessary;
    (c) transport between the airport and place of accommodation (hotel or other).
    2. In addition, passengers shall be offered free of charge two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails.
    3. In applying this Article, the operating air carrier shall pay particular attention to the needs of persons with reduced mobility and any persons accompanying them, as well as to the needs of unaccompanied children.

These are the links I have been looking at:

    https://eu261expenseclaim.ryanair.com/
    https://www.ryanair.com/content/dam/ryanair/help-centre-pdfs/eu261-version14/EU261%20for%20United%20Kingdom%20-%20EN.pdf
    1. RIGHT TO COMPENSATION
If you are involuntarily denied boarding or your flight is cancelled or delayed by three or more hours with respect to the scheduled arrival time (provided no extraordinary circumstances occur), you are entitled to receive the following amount from us:
€250 in respect of all flights of 1,500km or less; or
€400 in respect of all intra-EU flights of more than
1,500km, and for all other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km.
If we are able to offer you re-routing on an alternative flight and the arrival time of the re-routed flight does not exceed the scheduled arrival time of the flight booked:
by two hours, in respect of all flights of 1,500km or less; or
by three hours, in respect of all intra-EU flights of more than 1,500km, and for all other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km.
The compensation set out above may be reduced by 50%. Distances shall be measured by the great circle route method.

    So much for that;
"Whilst we sympathise with your circumstances, we regret we are unable process a refund or issue you with a credit for booking confirmation number ******".

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 6,522 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Steve

Did your claim application specifically mention EU261 delay payment, the standard form does not make it clear, and if you didn't mention it, then their statement of "no refund or credit" is correct as far as it goes, as there is nothing relating to compensation for the delay mentioned in that specific phrase.

You may have to get more specific information about the reason for the delay, in our case, there was no technical reason at all, they chose to use the aircraft that was due to operate our return sector to carry the delayed earlier flight, so it was cut and dried, which may be the reason they dealt with it so rapidly.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I had a cancelled flight due to snow. Now, that did not grant me EU261, fine. They gave me a refund, that was ok. But refused point blank to give me money for food, essentials and a phonecall.

Regardless of the reason for the cancellation, I am still entitled to those things, and they wouldn't. Not worth chasing it for the few quid.

Travel Insurance refused as well, as by the time I'd finished dealing with Ryanair, I was outside of the time they'd entertain the claim.
