Jaw surgery

Hi all, has anyone ever had jaw surgery? I've been to 2 orthodontist now and both had included the option of jaw surgery as my lower jaw didn't develop properly apparently. It all sounds very scary to me.

I would need traditional braces for 2.5 years with surgery to move lower jaw forward. The other option is braces to compromise to move upper teeth back to fix bite with extractions on both sides. And final option is just to correct some crooked teeth on top with invisalign.

I'm in my 30's now and would consider the full correct treatment for jaw surgery and braces but it sounds terrifying. My other choice is just invisalign to correct top teeth and get on with my life risk free. I'm not sure i like the compromise solution.

    Thanks in advance

It all depends what you want at the end of the day. All options have their advantages and disadvantages.

Does it affect your appearance, quality of life , function etc ? If it's appearance then be aware that orthodontic treatment has a modest effect on facial profile at best. Over 80% of changes are dental.

The only way to fix the skeletal discrepancy is surgery.

Extractions and fixed appliances will help the way your teeth meet but won't affect the underlying skeletal discrepancy.

A lower jaw advancement is a day procedure in some Irish hospitals and patients often say that having wisdom teeth removed is a worse procedure.

Of course no procedure is risk free. You need to weigh up the pros and cons as they apply to your case and you need a team that you trust.

Thanks for reply. I'm aware that my bite and jaw are slightly off but i'm now 32 and have lived with it without any issues. My main concern when going for appointment was my top teeth so it seems invisalign is a solution for this and there is no extractions involved.

The overbite i have is not huge in my opinion. I think maybe i'll go for invisalign and leave the jaw as it is. I understand the surgery may not be complicated but it seems recovery is quite long. I'd also be worried i might regret it. I'll go back to my ortho for further discussion maybe as there is one molar i need extracted at the moment and i guess i'll be left with this gap is i choose invisalign.
