Is BAI approval required for a licensed station to change its name on RDS

In the midst of all the Ed Sheeran mania RedFM in Cork has changed its station name on RDS to Ed FM and is playing custom jingles for the weekend.

Was wondering if this move is something they would need to clear with the BAI beforehand or are they just chancing their arm?

"Judge the R button on the keyboard for the RDS encoder was broken"

Radio Kerry used to change their RDS to "Up Kerry" in the past when Kerry were in an All Ireland final.

Interesting question. I would have expected it to be locked down, otherwise what's to stop broadcasters changing it all the time as part of an advertisement.

Why on Earth would the BAI care?

Because as the licensing body they might be concerned that their licensee has changed the displayed name of their station on RDS radios and are playing jingles/station IDs with a different station name than they are supposed to.

I'd imagine that using the licensed service name would be a contractual obligation.

The BCI or possibly IRTC stopped the use of scrolling (change the setting every few seconds, as it should be static) RDS anyway.

    1. Technically yes. A chance of PS requires ComReg approval via the BAI.

    2. Scrolling PS is not allowed. Scrolling RT is allowed.

    3. Advertising via RDS is expressly forbidden. The change of PS isn’t advertising.

    4. Playing wall to wall Ed Sheehan or any other big change in music policy requires BAI approval.

    5. Great idea by Red FM, radio needs a bit of fun and break from the norm.
