Hi, I was hoping someone on here could help me.
I'm looking to buy a Golf R 151 and am looking to pay cash with a px of an 06 Octavia VRS (Passed NCT a week ago 160km on clock). Do you know how much I should expect to save off the price with the trade in?

Dealers only give discounts on cars they are selling when you have no trade-in. This is known in the motor trade as a straight deal or cash discount. When you have a trade-in they just move figures around and take the discount off the car they are selling and put it on your trade-in value making it look like your getting more money for your trade-in. You need to focus on the cost to change price when you have a trade-in, this is how much the dealer wants from you with your trade-in for their car. Its the only figure that matters.

Just to add a bit, I wasn't looking to save anything as its a decent price for the car, more how much my car would be worth as a trade in on average. I did a poor job of explaining that.

Dealers seem to have the magic figure of a grand for old trade ins which you might get off anyway so ur not saving anymore money a good nick vrs private has to be worth couple of grand

Again the important figure to concentrate on is the figure that he wants from you with your car to trade up, you also need to compare more than one dealer to see which is the better deal.

For example, Dealer A could price his Golf R at 45k and give you 5k for your Octavia so wants 40k to change. And Dealer B might price their Golf R at 43k but give you 2k for your Octavia so wants 41k to change. So while Dealer B prices his Golf lower he actually wants slightly more from you for it.

If your VRS is petrol then expect very little for it on a trade in, you'd be better off selling it privately then approaching the VW dealer as a cash buyer and get a better price for the Golf.

Should still be worth €2.5 - €3k privately I would have thought?
Dealer will essentially want it for free and should have a good bit of margin built into a used Golf R.

Thanks again for all the help. Will be back in Dublin in a few days, if its still available will look to buy it outright then sell my car afterwards.
This was the car I was looking at by the way:

That's a UK import which are lower spec than the Irish equivalent, also the dealer would not have a great reputation for after sales service. I'd certainly be doing a UK history report on a car like that especially around crash/write off history.

I'd say €2k tops for an 06 VRS petrol model, they're not a very desirable car and so selling it could be difficult if its over priced.

If its only worth that, would just keep it up as a spare car as wouldn't be worth the hassle of selling then.

I presumed UK imports would usually be higher spec.
What would the irish ones have over the UK ones?
Thanks for the heads up about the dealer.

Not with VW. In late 2015 Irish ones came with the technology pack which included the likes of sat nav, rear view camera and other bits. I'm sure one of the Golf R owners may be along soon to fill in on the more specifics.
