Hi so basically I'm in UCC studying history and art history and I'm looking into a carrer in teaching. I understand and know about the teaching council of Ireland.
To be eligible to be a teacher you have to reach a level of requirments. I am looking into art teaching and I know I must have a level 8 in design but I have a level 8 in Art history. Is there any back door system I could use to attain the requirements in design without having to return to an art college, like a night course or whatever. I already have a level 5 but that is not suffice. If I am able to get the degree I need in design I want to apply for the masters in education in CIT then.

If not could anyone with a degree in history art history ect. tell me what route they took in relation to jobs.

    Thank you

I'm afraid a degree in art history definitely wouldn't be enough to teach art, craft and design in post primary. The art degree is necessary, as you need to be familiar with techniques relevant to a range of crafts as well as health and safety aspects. Only options are a combined art teaching/art degree offered by NCAD, I'm not sure if cork offer it, or else a 4 year degree in art, followed by a Master's in art education. Another possible option might be a postgraduate diploma in further education with a focus on art teaching, and working in adult education.

Alternatively, when you have your degree, you could complete a master's in education for teaching history. Though, there isn't a huge amount of teaching jobs in either history or art I'm afraid.

Youve got no chance of teaching art and design with an art history degree. You would need a degree in Fine art (which covers art history) or design/fashion design and a pme in post primary teaching or a degree in art education. You could do a masters in primary education but youll need to have Irish. As mentioned a postgrad dip in further ed is another option but it wont get you a job as an art teacher, it could get you a job as a history or art history teacher further ed colleges. You could do a PME and take on another subject like English or Religion, I know TCD offer extra subjects on their pme course.
