Buying Dacia Duster 2017

    Question:

Two Dacia Duster Prestige (White) 2017 I'm interested in buying - both from dealers

    (1) 45,000km - price €17950
    (2) 4,500km (Demo) - price €18950

is it worth paying an extra €1K for 40,000 less km on the clock?

    thanks

In this case i'd say yeah. The Duster isn't a bad car but it isn't the most resistant to wear and tear. That and I'd expect a 2017 with that kind of mileage was probably ex rental.

Is the 5 year warranty stil optional in them? If so then don’t rule out a new one.
Also, list price on a new one is €20k so a demo would want to be less.
I seriously doubt a dealer has a “demo” since 2017. More likely a courtesy car or rental.

Yeah , it’s too high for a one year old car , and I do a lot of mileage myself so it’s probably not a runner.

I’m not keen on getting a new one because of instant depreciation. Only new car I ever bought was 3 door Rav 4 - great car but the depreciation hurt !

A new one is only 1k more though

As said op to get a year younger brand new one for an extra 1k seems a no brainer. Would be different if it was a 3 month old demo with 2k km on it rather than a year old one it would want to be cheaper than that at a year old.

Tbh op I think you can do a better deal than that. Honestly these lads are heavy with stock alot of the hpi stuff coming back in can't shift it.

You need to be more hard with the sales person.

I'd be looking for more off and the lower mileage one for the price of the higher one.

And walk out if needed there are plenty of Renault dealers all with the same problem. Stock

I don't think too many Dacia dealers are stuck with stock to be fair, unless things have changed very recently.

I worked in a Renault dealer a couple of years ago and the Dacias were like hot cakes, you couldn't keep them, particularly second hand ones.

Dacia also seem to hold fairly strong resale values which is always nice.

I’m in Louth and the better lower mileage car is in Mayo. Garage very hard to get a hold of . Spoke to sales manager 2 days ago and despite 2 emails and a call at lunchtime today (he was with a customer) I haven’t been able to speak to him. Don’t think he’s gagging to sell the “demo” to me or stuck with it!

I’m only looking for the Prestige - highest spec - there’re 21/22K to buy new , out of my budget . €18950 for 2017 car with 4500 km is better for me . And I want white ! Have had too many dark colors and hate silver .

Very good advice here , appreciate it.

(Trading in a lovely Renault Megane Tom Tom 2011 with just 88K on it but best I can get is 5K trade in ). Struggling to sell it privately.

TBH I’m not in a rush.

A new Prestige Duster is just shy of 22k. Out of the two of those I'd pay the 1k extra and take the demo. They come with a 3 year warranty but an optional extra two years. We can't keep second hand Dusters even ones that are rough so we won't retail but trade lads will snap them up.

I’m off work tomorrow so will ring that garage in Mayo and try and get a deal on the demo . I need 5K for my own car though , I’ve got €5K from my local Renault on it so hoping they’ll match it (depressing trading in a good car for so little )

Prestige is 20090 plus delivery net of discount (which admittedly won’t be a whole lot)

Trade in on a Dacia won’t be big as they don’t have margin to bump up the trade in.

182 is coming shortly so they'd want rid of the Duster. So you can try better the deal a bit for yourself something like a years tax and a full tank. The Megane would probably retail around 8k so they should at least match or even better it

There is a new Duster model due very soon so dealers might be keen to shift current stock.

Probably won't be that soon will probably be 2019 depending on what stock they have of the current model. The Renault Alaskan was meant to be out in the end 2017 but then it was March 2018 and still no word on it that's if they even go a head with it here

If you look at the doors they seem to be the same. Looks like another facelift.

I assume you've driven a Duster? I'd rate a 2011 Megane as a better car in every respect.

Loved my Megane , owned 2 of them . Love the Dacia too as I’ve test driven on 2 occasions . I used to have a Rav 4 and really prefer the height , Megane is too low to the ground and not suitable for driving to Mournes and Wicklow mountains for hiking !

Both my Megane were coupe so I need this change . The Dacia engine is exactly the same engine as my last Megane (110 bhp). A practical car with enough space inside to throw a bike in not to mention the roof is what I need for my life at the moment .

Make sure you are comfortable in one for a long drive as the suspension on them is quite primitive.

Hard to judge this on short test drives but the high seat position suits me better. Was getting lots of sciatic pain from old hamstring tear on long trips in the Megane . Coupe has a low seat position and my poor Mum who is 80 had been struggling whenever I took her out !

I’ve made my decision today , deposit on lovely blue one in Linders (172 with just 5400km on clock, lots of extras including spare wheel, boot protector and rear bumper protector (last owner had a small dog). He changed as he wasn’t driving enough . Happy days for me .
Best trade in value on my Megane of all three garages too.

I was test driving some SUV's recently and the Duster was among them..

    Ateca, Karoqu, Duster, Kuga
Spend allot of my work week in my motor as i'm on the road with work and do about 35K a year, currently driving an '09 4Motion Tiguan 140BHP

The duster didnt work for me, only a 20KM test drive, but it was enough..
The seated position is high and upright, but I couldnt get the seatback adjusted so I could feel it supporting my back all the way up, it either felt like it wasnt supporting my from the mid back up, or it was pushing my shoulders forward too much. This is an important issue for me as I have an injury in both lower and upper back from an RTA.. The seat base should be longer too..

The switch layout is too random, the light switch way too low at my right knee, the mirror adjuster lost under the handbrake.. just why ? There is other real estate available that could accomidate these.. The plastic isnt premium, but it would be acceptable if that was the low point.

The engine was a little noisy cold, but when warmed up was smooth and given the light weight of the duster could move it along nicely.. Gearing was fine.. These are well tested units and ive no doubt they would give long economical service.

Steering was both vague and twitchy at the same time, braking was good..

I tow allot, each week, and more important for me a 1400kg caravan, with a towing limit of 1500kg its grand on paper but the light weight and uneasy handling wouldnt put me at ease that it would tow well.. And I couldnt see me doing a 2K km holiday round france in it, I wouldnt risk my family or caravan with it.

Wind noise around door seals was disappointing, my first car was a RWD 1979 Kadette and it sealed up better.. On the main road I could distinctly hear each gust breaching the door seals..

My friend is on his second duster and he wife her second logan and they love them, reliable and economical.. Thats just not enough for me, I was hopeful but disappointed, I had hoped it would surprise me and leave me with a cheaper new motor, but no.

To be fair the Duster is probably a little smaller than the Karoq/ Ateca/ Kuga, I think it may be a class below them but to be honest the small SUV market is so rammed now the lines are a bit blurred. Anyway, an entry Duster is nearly 10k cheaper than a Karoq for example so you could only naturally expect 10k worth of compromises. You've nailed it with reliable, economical but a bit frill-less.
