For the pilot episode (link below), China travels to Norway to help the owner of a Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI who's been struggling with his car for the past two years. The biggest hold up was getting approval to install a more powerful 16-valve engine instead of the 8-valve engine the car came with in order to bump power to 137 horsepower from the stock 110 hp.

Watched it last night, I enjoyed it. Hopefully it's the start of something good.

Pretty much most of the work was done by the owner and his friends :p They didn't really need edd and if they did i'm afraid they were in trouble. Edd is a good presenter though to be fair.

Wheeler dealers is still a much better show. Ant is doing a great job and as a result the show isn't worse off without edd.

Mike you mean? :p I don't find him bad tbh. I know he can be a bit overbearing but I think the two of them work well together and all that excitement is only for the cameras anyway. In reality he seems like a decent guy.

Why is this new Edd thing on YouTube? Wheeler Dealers is fine btw but Car S.O.S. is better IMHO.

Easy format - growing customer base - direct payment to ed no middle men.
Can control his own content - cheaper production costs.

    Its the best format tbh

Good first episode but I felt the show lacked something and I think that thing is the non mechanical aspect of Wheeler Dealers. The little blurb about whatever car was the focus of the episode and the whole viewing/meeting the owner/test drive scenario was an enjoyable buildup to Edd donning the orange gloves. Nothing wrong with this new format which is more geared towards the actual restoration work but I still think a mixture of both approaches, makes for a better programme.

I agree, i think it needs some pints at the start for a car chat or something less formal. Just to bed it in.

I liked it. Bit clunky at the start, but that's to be expected for the first episode of a new show.

My only criticism is that some parts had a very staged feel to them. Like, why did the owner already have the exact 16v engine he needed (with the original 8v unit whipped out), but seemingly no clue as to how to legally install it.

Also, the owner was clearly very handy himself, and had quite the toolkit, which made me wonder whether he actually needed Edd's help at all. Hell, he decided to go 'off-piste' and fit carburetors instead of injectors - all without Edd's input.

Hope to see more owners in genuine need!

Really enjoyed that! A throw back to the early Wheeler Dealers episodes. I'm inspired to do my own brake discs and pads in future!

Car S.O.S would be great if they ditched a certain extremely annoying presenter. As it stands it's hard to watch, especially when he goes to buy parts or services and tries to get them discounted. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it's the way he goes about it.

Early wheeler dealer episodes and even later ones are far more in depth than edd's new show. There was lots of editing in that episode where it just showed edd getting a set of wheels powder coated, hoisting in an engine, fitting a headliner but not completing the job.

The two jobs he only really tackled were the disk brakes and the windscreen.

It would of been nice to see him connect up the engine and doing the carb swap. That would of been far more interesting than the basic jobs that were done.

Was thinking the same thing. He flew all the way over there just to tell him something he could have searched online and found out, or just phoned Jan. "I'll head off and get the alloys powder coated, you get everyone you know around to do everything else, crack on!"

    Wasn't that impressed with it.

He helped him assemble the headliner, drop the engine in to the bay, fit rear disc/calipers and then powder coat the wheels, so in reality he done f*** all of any use.

There was a huge gap in the story from fitting discs/caliper set up to being on the road with not one iota of mention of the tuning/set up of the twin carbs etc

    I hope it improves.

Yeah, it did feel very staged. It was more like Edd put out the call on Twitter for lads who were about to do a restore a car and wouldn't mind him filming it, rather than asking people who hadn't a hope of doing a restoration if they needed HIS help!

I'd rather something along the lines of Car SOS. Just get people who genuinely need a hand with a car and do that, with less of the scripting.

I've just watched it and I have to say I really liked it!

I like Edd's demeanour, especially if you compare him to the very first episodes of Wheeler Dealers.

However, it's definitely not perfect. I would have liked to have seen more on the engine installation, that was very erm.... American, one minute it wasn't there, the next minute it was! That's why I loved the older Wheeler Dealers, they got technical and into the nitty gritty, I love seeing how jobs on cars are done. It was disappointing given that Edd told us he left Wheeler Dealers because it was getting far too Americanised and we weren't seeing how the jobs were done.

I didn't quite understand why he decided to go back to carburettors, I would have liked a lot more detail on that. I definitely would have liked to know how you'd convert a fuel injected engine to carbs.

I didn't realise they would make the engine sound different (when I think of back in the day, I don't remember carb engines sounding different to the equivalent fuel injected engine - the main thing I remember is that fuel injected engines would start in any weather whereas carbs could be tricky depending on the model) - and would that affect the legal technicalities in Norway?

Overall, though, it was very good and I understand that it can't be exactly the same as WD. I like the idea of Edd going out to help someone very much and seeing the end results. Going to visit that VW place at the start, the fact it was an 'ordinary' car rather than something super exotic and the fact that he's going to be going to different places and helping out enthusiasts are all big pluses for me.

Twin carbs sounded great! A real bark off them.

Yeah twin carbs generally sound very throaty and deep but his sounded terrible, they sounded like they weren't set up properly and the exhaust note was raspy and cheap.

IMO he (the owner) ruined a good car by even dropping the 16v unit in to it but then made it worse with the twin carb set up.

It wasn't great was it, all Ed did was fit disc brakes, help with a headliner and went off to get wheels refurbished (which is what Mike used to do)

There wasn't even any footage of the first time they tried to start it,also when Ed was doing the brake conversion your man was nowhere to be seen. I believe Ed's other half is from Norway , i wonder is this guy a part of the family maybe ?

I'm sure I heard her once on YouTube and I would have said she sounded Scottish if anything.

Maybe she is from the south west of norway :p

Looks like Edd is back again with another format:

He really does seem to be lurching from pillar to post with ideas for new car shows.
