    When should a timing belt/chain be changed on a 2009 BMW 3 series(316 d)?

there should be a chain, so if it's not noisy it's not so urgent

I don't think there was a 316d back in 2008. The 318d was the lowest powered diesel 3 Series back then. BMW engines haven't had belts for many years, they are all chain driven.
