Munich Trip Report April 2018

Blue Punto

April 18th I had my first trip of the year .
I decided to go to Munich as it was somewhere Id never been and had great spotting facilities.
Weather report before hand had overcast skies with rain expected so I dressed accordingly

Departed Dublin On Ryanair EI-DLY
On arrival in Munich I was met with sunny skies and the temp during the day reached 28 degrees which caused havoc with heat haze

I remember when Munich was being built. It was a clean sheet build and it’s a magnificent airport to fly into sitting in the pointy end of things. Great photos and you certainly enjoyed your day seeing serious hardware

Pity they did'nt do the same when building Brandenberg/Berlin airport. Any sign of it opening?

The biggest fugh up in history. Hearsay has it there was an Irish contractor involved plus multiple outside agencies and it ended up a sh/t show re fire safety issues.

According to this article in the times it may not open. It seams no body is in control

Great day except for the intense heat.
Great spotting facilities which include a ramp tour for 9 Euro
Great variation of types and lots of LH regional jets

As a Berlin resident I obviously wish that sodding airport would open already. We tend to fly mostly from Schönefeld and it's an absolute kip.

An article from today says it should open in October 2020 and that they are going to build a new terminal in time for this because it would be way under capacity otherwise:

A "funny" quote from that article: They are replacing the passenger information monitors in the airport before it even opens because they are end of useful life!

Great photos OP!! I think the Thai King spends quite a bit of time in Munich. I've seen photos of him there before.

Berlin Brandenberg is the biggest balls up I've ever read about. So many things wrong.

In the last few years I've come to realise we vastly over estimate the concept of German efficiency and quality. Its a myth. They make the same mistakes as everyone else. VW being a good example.

If planning another trip, think about coming for the munich security conference in February.
No problems with heat haze, and you have a crazy amount of government and military planes that you never see there otherwise, or the likes of private jet of Bill Gates or other international business figures.

The best story from this years conference was that the Iran delegation was stranded because no oil company at the airport would re-fuel the government jet due to international sanctions, and in the end the Luftwaffe gave 17000L of Kerosine to allow the Iranians to get underway.
