Are the auto boxes in these multimode? I have heard that the MM is troublesome.

Does the Vitz of the same vintage have a multimode or is it a different box?

Lastly are the multimode boxes the ones with the paddle shift on the steering wheel or is there also a multimode without the paddleshift?

    Cheers!

The hybrid is the Yaris to get..

The vita automatic is usually CVT far as I know.

Multimode has +/- on the gear shifter. All 2006+ non hybrid Irish/uk models are Multimode AFAIK

Thanks I was hoping you would post.
    Hybrid is out of budget.

    Is the cvt reliable?

Yeah, far as I know it is. Only driven one once (1.0) and it was grand.

If you’re going down the JDM route, maybe a H9nda Fit would be worth a look?

What about a Hyundai i10 or i20. Good old fashioned torque converter.

Provided the oil has been changed in them, the honda cvt should be fairly reliable.

You may consider a Suzuki Swift as well, if you go used, the mk1 non-import have a 4-speed torque converter with a 1.5ltre engine, the JDM have CVT with 1.2 engines, the mk2 have CVT with the same 1.2 litre but they come with a "manual" mode with 7 speed and the new ones have a torque converter with 6-speed with a turbo 1litre (if I'm not mistaken, might want to double check this one).
