Exposed Concrete

    Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with exposed concrete?
I think it looks quite well, but I've had no actual contact with the product.

    How does it age?
Are there any issues with it in terms of its upkeep and long term appearance?

However, others in the family are thinking about asphalt and paving bricks.

    Thanks.

What do you mean by exposed? Are you talkinf about patterned imprinted concrete?

Concrete is laid and then a retarder is sprayed onto the concrete. 24 hours later the top layer is power washed off exposing the stone in the concrete.
Different styles and effects can be obtained with different stones.

This is a pretty informative page on exposed aggregate concrete.

I've had similar thoughts myself, you get the advantage of concrete, and it is a more interesting finish than a standard brush finish slab. However I couldn't get away from the feeling that it just looks like old weathered concrete, similar to concrete paving in 1960's housing estates. If you go for it make sure your concrete supplier can provide the right aggregate! You want rounded gravels / shingle rather than crushed rock.
