Commercialising a Toyota avensis estate

Hey folks, I've a '08 Toyota avensis estate that's gone a bit tatty for personal use, my wife's exact words were that it's a f**kin disgrace! :-)
Anyway I was thinking wouldn't it make a grand vehicle for farm and building work. It has towed everything I would need to tow.
Has anyone ever commercialised a vehicle like this?

Yes, no problem. You have to get a suitably qualified individual 😠to cert it, I have taken out the seats, welded the seatbelt bolt holes and dropped the belts behind the trim. The S.Q.I.s appear to be getting scarce, think there's one in Cavan.

I was told it can be done but you won’t get commercial tax on it anymore.

You definitely should still get the commercial tax rate. Getting a decent insurance quote would be the tricky part if you've no commercial insurance ncb.

You'll have to take the back seats out and permanently remove the seatbelts and seat belt mounting point. It's recommended you do this by welding up the mounting points but filling them with solder is a nicer and less permanent solution.

If the only advantage is the commercial tax rate I can’t see the point. 2l diesel avensis is 390 per year and the commercial rate is 333. A lot of hassle for not much of a saving there!

A neighbour bought a 04 BMW 530D estate last year and coimmercialised it. I think he is saving over a €1000 a year on road tax.

The reason I want to do it is that I can only insure one road car at a time.
The commercialised Avensis will replace my 05 ranger which is on it's last legs.
I will be transferring the commercial insurance from my ranger to my commercialised avensis.
The road tax will be actually increasing from €280 to €330.

A berlingo or Peugeot partner with 3 seats might be a better bet than all that bollocking

That's a different kettle of fish. Theyd be over €1200 to tax normally.

I would consider buying and subjecting myself to a Renault or Peugeot to be far more bollocking :-).
Seriously though the avensis is bullet proof and well able to tow anything I want to tow.
I've priced up the commercialisation of it at less than €500, cheap way of replacing the jeep, the avensis itself is worth very little money anyway.
I just want something I can hop into with the farm clothes.

Possible disadvantages would be that he knows the reliability/servicing of his own vehicle and I, at least, would trust the Toyota to last longer on Irish backroads.

I enjoyed driving the 'pocket rocket' Peugeot 205's I had but they were always having suspension components replaced.

The longer, heavier Avensis might be better suited to towing too.

I doubt if you need to register it as commercial to transfer insurance. Check with insurance company.

Insurance companies are getting very suspect towards non factory vehicles.

I would definitely get a quote in writing before converting the avensis.

Sales reps get commercial insurance all the time on company cars such as the Avensis. I wouldn't bother doing a tap to it. Just ring the insurance company and explain.

If its certified by a motor engineer & you re-register it commercial you can get commercial tax if you have a hard number.

then you can insure it as a commercial vehicle for farming use
