What do you make of Fords decision to pull the plug on its sedans/saloons and smaller cars?

Not sure how this is in euope, tho is it the states only?

Personally if they do its a big loss in my book.

People in America want to drive ridiculous SUV things.
This will not affect Europe at all.

    Sources are your friends
Ford's decision to discontinue almost all of its car models in North America within two years will leave its Canadian operations intact, since they are focused mainly on sport utility vehicles and light trucks, the company says.

The car segment of automotive sales has been shrinking since 2012, while sales of sport utility vehicles have grown over the same period — a trend that's expected to continue.

Economy of scale. Not enough demand for the cars they’re discontinuing in America. But the cars are pretty popular in Europe so they’ll continue producing them here.

Light trucks have different rules to cars.

Like relaxed rules on mileage and emissions and 25% import tax.

It's cheaper to import EU "cars", remove the rear windows and seats and "re-manufacture" them back to "light trucks" than pay the tax.

IIRC The removed parts and trimmings have to be destroyed for legal reasons.

I got a US Focus as a hire car a good few years ago. It was nothing like a European Focus it felt cheap and low quality, I've driven a few similar aged Irish Focus since and they still seem better quality today than the new US one. Actually all the US made hire cars I've had have been fairly bad quality while imports were vastly superior.

We do/did the same with commercial 4x4s. They all came in as passenger vehicles and everything removed had to be destroyed. A senior Toyota executive was visiting Ireland and they had to hide the commercial 4x4s.
