Celtic Tiger: Has arrogance set back in?

8 or 9 years ago you could rock up to a chipper van and yer man would be saying

"Ah go on you'll buy an ould bag of chips .. go on .. I'll throw in a free sausage go on sure you will sure you will won't you"

If you try it now you'll be met with

"Chips are €6 now. They were €5 yesterday but they're gone up with the times. That's it. Now fcuk off if you're not getting them." followed by a firm bang of his fist on the counter.

Dublin landlords have had the luxury of being able to do this for years now but it's only recently that ordinary folk who have chipper vans seem to have gone back to this.
Are people feeling comfortable enough with their financial situation to be able to go back to being arrogant again?

Ireland is nothing like the tiger years. The government is 100 times more socialist now and tax everything much more. Commie Leo has highlighted he doesn’t want wages to increase as he thinks it helps him him if multi nationals are attracted by the low wages of the work force.
There may be jobs but they are muck wages. Commie Leo likes it this way.

    Lol 6e chips?

Also where the hell did you get a free sausage? Usually they throw in a few chips if you buy a sausage not the other way around.

I think this is the first time I've seen Leo Varadkar being called a Communist!

Historically speaking, Fianna Fail would be regarded as more left wing than Fine Gael.

Do you know what an actual Communist is?

Leo the Communist, that a new one. Between that, and the Tories trying to paint him as some sort of 'up the ra' republican he must be having fierce identity issues the past while.

I know somewhere that sells a large bag of homemade chips enough for 2 people for 2.50. Whatever about the arrogance the exaggeration never left.

They are all communists. Look t your wage slip. Look at the tax rates, the stleath taxes all the taxes. Taxation is force and so is hardcore socialism. I have always viewed Leo has a die hard commie for his support for such a regressive system.

I don’t think the arrogance ever left tbh - if anything it’s even worse now. There's a thought process that everything should be free and no one should be held accountable fir their own choices in life. And if you rnd up suffering in away because of your choices it’s ok because you can just some-one to sue abd get away with it.

The socialist in government have bred a nation who want to be dependent on the state. They want free everything....but it’s not free, it’s rubbish everything paid for over the odds through regressive taxation.

Where are you buying your chips? €2.50 a bag here.

The trick you're missing out on is not to order chips and expect a free sausage. Order a batter sausage and they'll fling a half scoop of chips in with the bag if they're any good.

Or just buy sausage and chips.

Your been ripped off, bag of chips is just 2.20-2.40 in most places...

leo is no communist for sure but we have a funny situation where ireland is right wing for business, and left wing on social issues while being communist as fcuk on taxation and then right wing again on health and education.

FUBAR was the term I learned as a child.

To be honest OP where Dublin is concerned, the arrogant c**t quotient is pretty resistant to economic ebbs and flows...

If someone asked me to point out where any credibility you may have had went out the window, I'd be hard pressed to go past this.

You must have missed the brexit thread where he reckoned the UK military is stronger than all 27 EU armies combined, and that they'd be within their rights to use military force against the rest of the countries of the EU if they don't get what they want in Brexit negotiations.

    After Ross O'Carroll-Kelly (https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/instagramming-your-food-will-result-in-you-being-violently-removed-from-the-premises-1.3432588)
I've never seen Sorcha and Honor so excited. We've managed to get a table – cue drumroll – in Il Sommo Poeta in Ranelagh. For those of you who've never had the pleasure, it's one of those restaurants that styles itself as an “exclusive dining club”. They don't take reservations – they actually answer the phone with a straight, “Fock off!” – and yet there's a 12-month waiting list for a table. To get in, you have to be recommended by someone who's already eaten there, then sit through a 30-minute pre-interview, at which Enzo, the maître-d, explains what they call “The Rules”. It's 500 yoyos to secure a seat, non-refundable in the event of cancellation; Instagramming your food will result in you being violently removed from the premises; and you are forbidden from explaining your food intolerances to the staff because they genuinely couldn't give a Foxtrot Oscar Charlie Kilo.As a matter of fact, you're required to sign a 32-page allergy waiver before they'll even confirm your booking. It's one of those restaurants that would make you feel genuinely proud that we've bounced back as a nation, and yet you know that when the next recession hits, it'll be gone within the hour. Sorcha is in her element, by the way. She goes, “Erika was – oh my God – so jealous when I told her we were coming here.” I'm there, “What's the food like – have you heard anything?” “Why is that important?” “Well, I'm kind of storving? ” - “There's so much more to a restaurant than whether the food tastes nice, Ross. It's not 2011 anymore.”

My local credit union are nearly out on the street throwing loans at people literally any reason they can come up with to give loans out really seem to be pushing them. Same with banks loans, credit cards, car finance no issue. Probably a sign they all have too much savings being held on deposit. Not sure if spending is back near what it was at peak but it is picking up.

Chips in any of my local chippers are €2.00-€2.50 per bag.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Berserker

€2.20 for a bag of chips in my local chip shop. Arrogance is setting back in. The number of 2018 SUVs on the road tells you that.
