We are looking into building on a family site however the council are not allowing any more septic tanks in the area. We were told we need to connect to the public sewer which is over 250 meters away. Does anyone have an idea of the cost of this and the procedure involved in this.

What's the height difference to the road with the mains?

I requested a connection using their website. I didn’t have the correct plans/maps that they required but it still proved adequate as they granted permission. We are only looking to cross the road (a busy enough road in Dublin) to make the connection. We currently have a shared sewer with eight houses, most including ourselves are looking to build over it or have already done so. The cost is what you would pay to the guys doing the work not Irish water but I believe that setup is changing and Irish water will take full responsibility for it.

At the moment you can still refer to you county council development charges, last one with water/foul charges. I.W. are still charging whatever local rate applied for the connection.

They will send out connection offer after the initial online approval application process. Beware that their standard details for construction can be very onerous and work out expensive. There are no more short cuts now they are involved. All details available on their webpage under developer services. All work has to be signed off by I.W. rep. eg. Standard wavin sewer pipe not allowed, has to be higher grave thicker wall pipe=€€€€€

Do you have permission to do works on the 250m stretch down to the public sewer. They wont do it for you and if council do they will charge you.

About been slow, deffo. 4-6 weeks is usual response time. Nothing you do will speed them up.

IW will permit up to 1:150max fall for 225mm pipe.

Before you go too far go and lift the existing manhole and get the invert level. work back to max 750mm cover, this is encased pipe, 1.2m otherwise. If you cant get the falls to the exst mh, your shagged. Alternative you pump to it but this is not a good option for so many reasons.....
