Car dead - banger or PCP?

    Hello,

I posted here a few months ago being worried about my car.
D day came, our family car, the C3 is dead, the repair would be way too expensive to justify it. I bought it as a small city car, we're now living in a rural location and it really doesn't suit our needs anymore, so decided to drive it dead.
I hoped getting more out of it though but the real problem is I'm without a car, and I need to do school runs and bring my partner to the bus, I do approx 50-100km a day, depending on all the runs.

I need a car ASAP and because it happened at the worst time we have very little savings to fall back on.
So the big question is buying a banger and getting a year or whatever time out of it (we're getting married next year) or do some 0 deposit PCP and walk away in 3 years time? Personally I'm not too keen on the PCP option but it might make sense for whatever bizarre reason?

To make matters worse the insurance situation is a bit of a mess. The current one is insured on my partner who's on a provisional, I couldn't get insurance at all on my Full EU, so I was the named driver on it. I'm now holding an Irish license and renewal is due next month (2 years NCB on the policy). So the policy is a on a provisional license with a fully licensed driver as named driver.

I basically just need a car that has more than 1.4l, is somehow insurable, drives and fits a reboarder in it.

I'd appreciate any advice that can help me with my predicament.

Something in between banger and brand new.

You can get pretty much any 08 car you want for in around 5 grand. Every shape size and style the cars are just about fully depreciated at this stage.

So everything from a supermini to an executive like an e class or 5 series and everything in between. Just choose wisely but I think 5k would be reasonable to borrow for a car in your situation

I get what you mean and I wouldn't disagree there but we're not in a position to source 5k fast at the moment unfortunately, especially with Insurance coming on top of that, it is tight as is at the moment.

    What is the budget?

We currently can fork out 1500 max, it's a really bad time for it to happen and in a month or two the situation would be very different, but unfortunately I need a set of wheels.

Don't pcp it if that's your budget.
Have a look at bangernomics thread here there's always a few gems spotted.

I wouldn't be comfortable PCPing a car anyway but someone brought it up and I thought maybe there's something I completely overlook why this would be the solution for my problem.

There's one that looks like a decent family car. Wouldn't be my cup of tea but just shows the value out there.

350 cars 2006 or later under 100000 miles on done deal under 1500 so you be plenty of choice.

Link something you might consider and people will discuss and advise

Keep going with your current car? Better your own banger than someone else's.

The reason why I didn't invest too much into it in the first place was that I bought it as a city car with a 1.1 engine, I now live very rural and on a busy day I put 100km on the clock, I went through a lot of petrol.
    If that makes sense.
The repair necessary would be probably twice the value of the car because it's some serious issue.

I left my Avensis in for front wheel bearings today, and the garage man asked me if I needed a cheap car.
He has a 1.4 2003 Daewoo Kalios with new test, I think under 80k miles that he claims to have serviced for the last 5 years, and is in really great condition. Looking 450 euro . I'd say 350 would drive it away.

Thanks Johnny, that's actually a brilliant option!
Just still a bit shocked that I have to look around so soon, only had the car 2 years and thought I would get a good bit more out of it. If it does me a year I'm more than happy really because then we're in a very comfortable position and can look for a more long-term solution.

Do you want to send me a PM with the details of the garage and the car? Bit restricted travel-wise, so anywhere Leister would be the best.

I know €400 is very cheap for a car, but those Kaloss are ****e. €1500 would get you something like a Corolla.

You’d probably even get a decent 1.4 diesel one for that.

It wouldnt be everyones cup of tea, but just threw it into the equation as I happened to see it today.

Oh yeah, if it got the on the road again quickly and cheaply it’s a great idea. I don’t think it’d be a good long term car for doing 100k a day though and we’d be back to square 1 soon enough.

I'm doing around 400 a week depending on how the man's working schedule is.

    https://www.adverts.ie/car/kia/cerato/2005-kia-cerato-low-mileage-111000-miles/15192026

    Any opinions on that one?

Sending my Father-in-law for the Altea tomorrow to take it for a spin.

Any advice on how to get rid of the broken car that's currently parked in front of my house?

I'd imagine the Daewoo would be pretty reliable?

Depending on size be also hard to beat a decent 02+ 1.4 vvti Corolla, mk1 Yaris or 1.25 fiesta.

I thought Insurance Companies will not insure a car over a certain age like 10 years or something, unless of course its a renewal for a car that you have already insured with them.

It varies from company to company but anything 15 years or old seems to be difficult to insure these days.

They’re not terrible, they’re very similar to the Hyundai Elantra. You might find parts expensive for it from Kia, and there aren’t that many around in scrapyards.

If the budget allows, you should really be looking at a 1.4 Corolla.
